Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) Is a worldwide federation of
national standards bodies (SO member bodies). The work of preparing Intornational
‘Standards is normally caried out through ISO technical committees. Each member
‘body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, gove:n-
montal ané non-governmental, in liaison with 1SO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the tochnical committees are circulated to
‘the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council, Thay are approved in accordanca with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
Intornational Standard ISO 406 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 10,

Users should note that al Intornational Standards undergo revision from time to time

Technical drawings — Tolerancing of linear and
angular dimensions
0 Introduction
For the purposes ofthis International Standard, all dimensions
and tolerances on the drawings have been stencil in upright
lettering. t should be understood that these indications could
just 28 wal be writen in ee-hand or inclined (talc lettering
‘without altering the mesning ofthe incications
For the presentation of lettoring (proportions and dimensions),
see (SO 3096-1
1. Scope and field of application
‘This International Standard specifies the indication of
tolerances for linger and angular dimensions on technical
drawings. Indicating such tolerances does not necessarily Imply
the use of any particular methad of production, measurement
‘or gauging,

tions.

3. Units
Doviations shall be exprossadin the same unit a the bacic size,
If two deviations relating to the same dimension have to be
shown, Both shall be expressed to the same number of deci
places (see figure 2, excent If one ofthe devitions is zero (sae
figure 8)
4. Indication of the components of a linear
dimension
4.1 180 symbols
‘The components of the toleranced dimension shal be indicated
Inthe folowing order:
a) the baslo size;
b) the tolerance symbol
I, in adaition to the symbols (se figure 1), its necessary to
‘express the values of the daviations (eve figure 2! or the limits
(of size (600 figute 3), the additional information shall be shown
in parenthoses.

42 Permissible deviations
‘The components of the toleranced dimension shall be insicated inthe following order (se figuras 4 to 6)
a) the basic size;
the values of the deviations.
Figure 4
11 ane of the two deviations is zero, this should be expressed by the digit 2er0 (sae figure 8).

If the tolerance is symmetrical in ralation to the basic size, the value ofthe deviations should bs indicated once only, preceded by the
sign + (ene figure 6)

43 Limits of size
‘The limits of size may be indicated by en upper end lower dimension (see figute 7).

4.4. Limits of size in one direction
Ifa dimension needs to be limited in one cection only, this should be indicated by adding “min.” or “max.” to the dimension (see
figure 8)

5 Order of indication of deviations and limits of size
“The upper deviation oF the uppe: limit of size shall be written in the upper position and the lower deviation or the lower limit of sao in
the lower postion, respective of whether a hole ora shaft i toleranced

6 Indication of tolerances on drawings of assembled parts
6.1 ISO symbols
“The toloance symbol fo the hole shal be placed before that forthe shaft (ee figure 9) or above it (sve figure 10, the symbols being
preceded by the basic size indicatod once only

IW its also necessary to specify the numerical values of the deviations, they should be written in paranthoses (see figure 11)

For the sake of simplicity (notwithstanding ISO 129), dimensioning with only one dimension ine may bo used (see figure 12)
6.2 Values by digits
“The dimension for each ofthe components ofthe assembled parts shall be preceded by the name (see figure 121 or item reference (see
figure 13) of the components, the dimension for the hele being placed in both cases above that forthe shaft

7 Indication of the components of an angular dimension
“The rules given for the indication of tolerances on linear dimensions are equally applicable to angular dimensions, except thatthe nits
ofthe basic angle end the fractions thereof, 23 well a the deviations, shall aways be indicatod (see figures 14 to 17). Ifthe angular
fdviation is expressed in ether minutos of a degree or seconds of a minute of 2 degree, the value ofthe minute or second shall be
preceded by 0° or 0°0, as applicable
