Nursing Staffing Computation Guide

The document provides examples of staffing computations for the nursing department of two hospitals - a 300-bed tertiary hospital and a 75-bed secondary hospital. For each hospital, it calculates the number of nursing care hours needed per day and year based on patient acuity levels. It then determines the total nursing staff needed by dividing the annual nursing hours by the number of working hours in a year. Shift assignments are also computed based on the total nursing staff figures.

Problem number 1: 300 bed capacity hospital (Tertiary Hospital)
300 x 0.30 (needing minimal care) = 90 x 1.5 (Level I) = 135 NCH/day
300 x 0.45 (needing moderate care) = 135 x 3 (Level 2) = 405 NCH/day
300 x 0.15 (needing intensive care) = 45 x 4.5 (Level 3) = 202.5 NCH/day
300 x 0.10 (needing highly specialized care = 30 x 6 (Level 4) = 180 NCH/day
135+405+202.5+180 = 922.5 total NCH/day x 365 days per year = 336, 712.5 NCH/year
8 working hours per day x 213 working days per year = 1,704 working hours per year
336,712.5 NCH/ year divided by 1,704 working hours per year= 198 nursing staff
198 x 0.15= 30 relievers
Total Nursing personnel needed: 198 + 30 = 228
Ratio of Professionals to non-professional (65: 35)
228 x 0.65= 148 professional nurses
228 x 0.35= 80 nursing attendants
Staff per Shift
148 nurses x .45= 67 nurses in AM shift
148 nurses x .37= 55 nurses in PM shift
148 nurses x .18= 26 nurses on nightshift
TOTAL = 148 Nurses

80 NA x .45 = 36 NA in AM shift
80 NA x .37 = 30 NA in PM shift
80 NA x .18 = 14 NA in night shift
TOTAL = 80 Nursing Attendants
