UGC Approves Dual Degree Programs

The University Grants Commission in India has now allowed students to pursue two degree programs simultaneously. The UGC expert panel recommended permitting students enrolled in a regular full-time degree program to also pursue one additional degree program simultaneously through open/distance learning at the same or another institution. Students will also be able to pursue an additional certificate, diploma, or post-graduate diploma simultaneously in regular or open/distance mode. The UGC aims to provide more opportunities for students and allow them to expand their skills and learn beyond their comfort zones.

Givingintolongstandingdemandsfromuniversitiesandstudents,theapexhighereducationregulator,ata
meetingonJuly31,decidedtoacceptitsexpertpanelsrecommendationsonpermittingpursuitofanadditional
degreeprogramme.
Thiswillallowstudentsenrolledinaregularfulltimedegreeprogrammetopursueonemoreadditionaldegree
programmesimultaneouslyonopen/distancelearningmodefromthesameuniversityoranotherinstitution.A
studentpursuingaregulardegreewillalsobeallowedtopursueanadditionalcertificate/diploma/advanced
diploma/PGdiplomaprogrammesimultaneouslyeitherinregularoropen/distancemodefromthesameuniversity
oranotherinstitution.
TheUGCexpertpanelheadedbyDrFurqanQamar,ViceChancellor,CentralUniversityofHyderabad,hadmade

bytheUGC.
UGCChairmanProfVedPrakashsaidtheideawastoallownewopportunitiestostudentswhowishtoexpand

Currently,nostudentinIndiacanlegallypursuemorethanonedegreesimultaneouslyeitherfromthesame

theoriginalthemigrationcertificateissuedbythepreviousinstitute.
Whiletherehasbeenalotofinteresttopursuetwoormoredegreeprogrammessimultaneouslytohelpstudents
improvetheirknowledge,skillandemployability,thepresentUGCguidelinesaresilentaboutthepursuitofa
certificate/diplomacoursealongsideadegreeprogramme.
