Support Blackstone Academy's Mission

The student body president writes a letter asking for a donation to their high school, Blackstone Academy Charter School. They explain that Blackstone has become their second home over the past three years, where every teacher and staff member challenges and supports students academically and emotionally. The school helped the student find their passion for enacting peaceful social change. Through various classes and experiences at Blackstone, the student has become convinced they can make a positive impact in their community. They have already started by getting involved in student government and giving speeches to their peers. The extra programs at Blackstone that have helped the student build confidence require funding to continue, so they are asking for a donation.

Dear __________,

I am writing to you as the Student Body President, and over the past three years,
Blackstone Academy Charter School has quite literally become my second home.
Ive been fortunate enough that I have come across great teachers who support me.
However, I never imagined I would attend a public school in which every single teacher and staff
member constantly challenges, motivates, and supports me academically and emotionally. They
have become my role models, my guides in life when I get lost. Whether to answer my questions
about quadratic equations over email or after school, to emotionally supporting me while my
family and I were undocumented, or simply having a conversation with me over why is it that
humans deal with their problems through violence? They have constantly been there for me and
my peers.
Blackstone has helped me find what I am passionate about. I had always felt very
strongly about using nonviolence as a means for change, however it was not until freshman year
World History through a lesson on Mahatma Gandhi that I learned that I was right: meaningful
change can come from peaceful means no matter how small the beginning of the movement is.
I put in endless hours of work at Blackstone. Not because I want perfect grades (thats
just a side effect) but because I want to learn. Thanks to the multiple job shadows at local
nonprofits, internships, CIPs, and all of my regular classes, Ive been convinced that I can make
a powerful change in my society. I mean, Ive already started. I became involved in student
government my very first year -- memorized a speech and recited it to 40 peers who were
basically still strangers to me. It was terrifying. This year, I memorized and recited a speech in
front of 165 students from all grades and every single staff member this year. This time, it was
exhilarating. Blackstone Academy has helped me build my self-confidence and I am excited to
see what more I can gain my junior and senior year. However, the extra bits and pieces that make
Blackstone the special place that it is takes money to run. As I came to this realization, I decided
to commit myself to helping raise money for a place so dear to me. Therefore, I ask that you
please support my schools mission through a year end donation. Your support will guarantee that
my peers and I will continue to grow and enjoy school as much as we do.
Sincerely,
Valentina Gutierrez
