Grease 1
Sarah Harmon and Maura Skelley
Lights fade up, scene plays out at New Years Eve in Times Square. The crowd cheers in
the background.
Crowd
5 4 3 2 1 Happy New Year!
Danny and Sandy Kiss. The crowd gets louder in the background. Danny mouths
something inaudible to Sandy
Sandy (yelling)
What??
Danny moves his hands, still mouthing something
Sandy (loudly)
I cant hear you!
Danny (Pointing to stage left)
Come on!
Crowd gets quieter as Sandy and Danny walk out of Times Square and into a quieter
street
Sandy
Glad I can say I did that at least once in my life.
Danny
Yeah. For as long as Ive lived here I cant believe I never did that. I always watched it
from my TV at home.
Sandy
Still, the fact that you get to watch it from New York City is incredible. Like Im sure you
can hear the crowd from your house.
Danny (chuckling)
Oh you can. Nothing about New York City is quiet. Thats why I spend so much time
at Central Park. Its a good place to clear my head and think.
Sandy
Really? I wouldnt think that The Danny Zuko would ever need to get away from his
charmed life.
Danny
Hey, not everyone who lives in New York City leads a glamorous life.
Sandy (Looking up at Danny)
What do you mean?
Danny
Well my familys never really been that close. My dad works all the time and my mom
tries to play it off like it doesnt bother her but I know it does. I guess my friends are
more my family than my parents actually are.
Sandy
Well whats wrong with that? I mean Im really close with my friends back home. If my
parents werent so controlling I would probably spend more time with them than I would
with my parents.
Danny (shakes his head)
Well my friends are great. I mean theyre fun to be with and we all kind of have fun
doing the same things. But I feel like I have to be a completely different person when
Im around them ya know? Like the Danny Zuko everyone knows isnt the person I
actually am. Youre the first person I feel like I dont have to be someone Im not around.
I feel like I dont have to put up a front around you.
Sandy
I know exactly what you mean! Lik-
Danny (cuts her off, raising voice)
At least your parents pay attention to you. Cause Im tellin you, the other way around
isnt as fun and exciting as you think it would be. Take it from me.
Sandy
Well its not that I want them to care less. Its just sometimes I feel like they dont listen
when I talk. Like they just think they know whats best for me and anything I want to do
that doesnt fall into the plan they have for me is out of the question. Its like Im
speaking to a wall with them sometimes and I just wish for once they would actually
listen to me when Im talking.
Danny (sounding hurt)
Well the grass isnt always greener, Sandy.
Sandy
Danny, dont be mad. Im leaving tomorrow.
Danny (stops in front of Sandys apartment)
That soon? Youve only been here for, like, four days!
Sandy
Danny, Ive been here for almost two weeks
Danny (shuffles awkwardly)
Well, I gotta go. See ya around.
Danny walks away, leaving Sandy to walk into her apartment. Lights fade out
Scene 2
Lights get brighter, shining on Sandy and her aunt in Sandys room
Sandys Aunt
Are you all packed, honey?
Sandy
Yeah, Aunt Becki. I think Im going for a walk though, I want to see the city one last
time.
Sandys Aunt
Sandy, youre a ferry ride away from the city, you can literally see it from your
apartment.
Sandy
Its not the same as walking through the streets and smelling all the street vendors hot
dogs. I love everything about it and its different looking at the lights from my window
back home. Ill be back in time for the ferry, dont worry.
Sandys Aunt
Alright, honey. Stay safe.
Sandy walks outside and sees Danny, who was standing there waiting for her
Sandy
Danny? What are you doing here?
Danny
I need to see you before you leave. Lets go for a walk.
Sandy and Danny walk across New York City and Sandy points out the man playing the
saxophone at stage left to Grease is the Word. He plays the beginning on the
saxophone, then the chorus joins in.
Chorus
I saw my problems and I'll see the light
We got a lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger we can go too far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are - grease is the word
*DANCERS ENTER AT STAGE RIGHT AND CROSS TO STAGE LEFT*
They think our love is just a growin' pain
Why don't they understand? it's just a cryin' shame
Their lips are lyin', only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel - grease is the word
[Chorus:]
(grease is the word, is the word that you heard)
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling
Music gets quieter as lights focus on Sandy and her parents at home in the summer
Sandy
Are you serious?! You better not be joking cause it isnt funny.
Mom (giggling)
No this isnt a joke. Weve already sold the house. Were leaving next Sunday so youll
have a few days before school starts that Wednesday.
Sandy (quickly)
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!
*MUSIC GETS LOUDER AGAIN*
We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality, belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are - grease is the word
[Chorus]
This is a life of illusion, a life of control
Mixed with confusion - what're we doin' here?
We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality, belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are - grease is the word
Sandy hugs her mom and kisses her dad on the cheek, then she runs off stage left, going
to pack. Her parents follow behind as the music comes to an end and dancers exit stage
right
Scene 3
Sonny
Hey, whatd you guys do this summer?
Putsy
Well I didRoger (cutting putsy off)
So nothing, right?
T-birds chuckle collectively
Putsy (lightly hits Rogers head)
Yeah, sure. What about you, Sonny?
Sonny
Oh.. Well.. It was awesome! Um.. Hey, theres Kenickey!
T-birds (together)
Hey, Kenickey!
Kenickey (puts the collars of his jacket up)
Hey, hey, hey, back off. Ive got a new image now.
Sonny
What are you doing, trying to bring back the fifties or something?
Kenickey
Well, Im sick of all these basketball shorts and Nike socks. Theyre too mainstream for
me now.
Putsy
I think your new look is pretty cool.
Sonny (laughing)
You finally have a use for all that grease in your hair
Kenickey
Hey, shut up. At least I did something this summer.
Sonny (getting defensive)
I did do stuff this summer! Every day actually. I was so busy, I didnt even text you
guys. I had plenty to do.
T-birds (in unison)
Like what?
Sonny (stuttering)
Well.. I, uh. Hey theres Danny! Lets go see what he did.
Kenickey
Okay sure, think of another lie to tell us while youre walking over
Putsy
Whatever Danny has to say is probably more interesting than any lie you could come up
with anyway
Danny turns and walks to stage left to the boys, with swagger in his step.
Sonny:
Hey Danny whatd you do this summer?
Danny
Yanno, same old, same old.
Kenickey
Meet any cute girls?
Danny (hesitates)
Well IKenickey
Dont tell me youre still thinking about that girl from New Years.
Danny
Oh, no. I was focusing more on basketball, maybe Ill try out this year..
Sonny (laughing)
Danny Zuko playing basketball? I thought you said the whole thing wasnt your scene
Danny
Im making some changes this year
Kenickey (exaggerated sigh)
Its the girl
Danny
Would you stop with that? Its all Ive heard from you since after New Years.
Putsy
Come on, Danny. You haven't been in a relationship since two years ago with Rizzo.
We want to see you with someone again.
T-birds nod in agreement
Sonny
Yeah, Danny.
Danny (scoffs)
You know commitments just aren't my thing.
Sonny (laughs)
Yeah, I know. Remember the science project you refused to work on with me because
you didn't want to become "committed"?
Danny
Alright, that project was like, two years ago.
Kenickey
Yeah, so was your last relationship
T-birds laugh
Lights shine on the other half of the stage, on Sandy and Frenchie
Sandy (stumbles into Frenchie, who was texting on her phone)
Oh, I'm sorry!
Frenchie
Hey, don't be, girl. I should've been looking up anyway. I don't think I've seen you
around here last year, are you new here?
Sandy
Yeah, I moved from New Jersey this summer.
Frenchie (points to stage left at Eugine)
Oh, nice! The last new student we had around here was Eugine
Eugine (starts to walk over, but gets hit in the stomach with a basketball)
Hey, girls!
Frenchie
Don't worry, the guys get better. Tell me about yourself, Sandy!
Sandy
Well, I really like the color yellow. I love to watch the stars at night, because theyre
yellow. I live with my mom and dad, and I do a lot of stuff with my aunt during vacations
and stuff. I can roll my tongue. In fact, I was in a competition for tongue rolling over the
summer. I came in fifth place. Ive always been really afraid of horses. Like, why do
they exist? Why do humans sit on them? Why do we use their hair to make violin
strings? I used to play the violin by the way, until I found out the strings were made of
horsehair. I love the winter and watching the snowfall, and coming here each year with
my aunt. My favorite holiday is New Years Eve.
Sandy looks down and smiles
Sandy
Sorry, I kind of went off on a rant there.
Frenchie ;))))
ohh, what happened to you on New Years?
Sandy (blushes)
Oh, nothing. I just met a boy and.. yeah
Frenchie
New York love. Thats adorable. Wait, here's some people you should meet.
Frenchie (to squad)
Hey guys! This is my friend, Sandy. I just bumped into her actually. She's new here.
Rizzo (looking up from her phone)
I literally do not care at all.
Marty
Hey Sandy! You look like this one girl I follow on Instagram! She's from Australia. Hold
on, I'll find her
Marty (mumbles)
She had the same hair as you, I swear! And face, clothing style, everything!
Jan
Hi, I'm Jan! Where'd you move from.
Sandy
New Jersey, right across the bay.
Frenchie
Hey, speaking of "bay"s, did you meet any cute Manhattan boys this summer?
Everyone in Squad puts down their phones and look up at Sandy
Sandy
Well, there was this one boy I met over Christmas break here
Marty
Tell us about him!
Lights shine to the left of the stage, on the T-Birds
Sonny
But I really want to know what Danny did over Christmas break with that girl, we never
heard the whole story
Danny
Winter lovin', had me a blast
Sandy
Winter lovin', happened so fast
Danny
Met a girl crazy for me
Sandy
Met a boy cute as can be
Both
Winter days drifting away
To, uh oh, those snowy nights
T-Birds
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you get very far?
Squad
Tell me more, tell me more
Like does he have a car?
Danny
She ran by me, she got a cramp
Sandy
He ran by me, got my suit damp **
Danny
Saved her life, she nearly froze
Sandy
He showed off messing around
Both
Winter sun, something's begun
But, uh oh, those Christmas nights
Squad
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
Tell me more, tell me more
Was it love at first sight?
T-Birds
Tell me more, tell me more
Did she put up a fight?
Danny
Took her bowling in the arcade
Sandy
We went strolling; drank lemonade
Danny
We made out under the dock
Sandy
We stayed out till twelve o'clock
Both
A New York fling don't mean a thing
But, uh oh, those winter nights
T-Birds
Tell me more, tell me more
But you don't gotta brag
Squad
Tell me more, tell me more
'Cause he sounds like a drag
Sandy
He got friendly holding my hand
Danny
Well, she got friendly down in the sand
Sandy
He was sweet, just turned eighteen
Danny
Well, she was good, you know what I mean
Both
New York heat, boy and girl meet
But, uh oh, those summer nights
Squad
Tell me more, tell me more
How much dough did he spend?
T-Birds
Tell me more, tell me more
Could she get me a friend?
Sandy
It turned warmer; that's where it ends
Danny
So I told her we'd still be friends
Sandy
Then we made our true love vow
Danny
Wonder what she's doin' now
Both
New York dreams ripped at the seams
But, oh, those winter nights
*BELL RINGS*
*TBIRDS EXIT STAGE RIGHT, SQUAD EXITS STAGE LEFT*
