TRAMADOL HCL (Ultram)

Tramadol hydrochloride (Ultram) is a centrally acting analgesic indicated for short-term management of acute pain. It works through modulation of noradrenergic and serotonergic systems as well as mild agonism of the μ-opioid receptor. Common adverse reactions include nausea, dizziness, headache, and constipation. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity, opioid dependence, or acute intoxication with CNS depressants. Nursing responsibilities include assessing pain levels, monitoring for cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological effects, and watching for signs of seizures or withdrawal.
