Teaching Quadrilaterals & Right Angles

Over three days, the lessons will teach students about quadrilaterals, triangles, and right angles through hands-on activities and games. In the first lesson, students will learn the properties of quadrilaterals like rectangles, trapezoids, squares and rhombus by sorting shapes. They will play a game with a string circle to identify shapes by their number of sides or vertices. The second lesson focuses on different types of triangles and introduces right angles. Students will draw and build triangles on a geoboard. They will then make a right angle finder tool. The third lesson involves students solving word problems about geometric shapes.

Lesson Title: Quadrilaterals, Triangles, & Right

Angles
Materials:
Shapes cards, string, index cards, markers/
crayons, geoboards, dry erase boards, dry erase
pen.

Procedures:
Lesson 1: Oct. 22 (Lgrp) Oct 23 (Hgrp)
1. What is a quadrilateral? (Rectangles,
trapezoids, squares, rhombus) Shapes with 4
straight sides that are connected.
2. On a dry erase board, draw a rectangle,
trapezoid, square, and rhombus. Are triangles
quadrilaterals?
(Lgrp) -as a group, you hold up each shape card
and decide as a group which card is a
quadrilateral and which is not. Make two sorts on
the table so that they can see the difference.
(Hgrp) - students work in pairs to sort their
shape cards into a group of quadrilaterals and
others. Have them explain to the class their
reasoning.
3. Lets look at the quadrilaterals in our group.
Find two different quadrilaterals. How are they
the same? How are they different? Some have
sides that are the same length, some are
slanted, some are parallel, or perpedicular.
How many verticies do they have? Remember
we said that verticies are the corners. Verticies
are Mathematicians words for corners.
4. Make a circle out of string on the table. Hand
out shape cards again (1-2 per student).
5. Pick your rule for the shape like (has three
straight sides...a triangle or has 4 straight
sides...a quadrilateral) have students put the

Grade: 1
Objective: Students will learn about
quadrilaterals and right angles
Approximate time: 3 20 minute rotations for
groups of 6 students over 3 days.
Tues: Lgrp-quadrilaterals
Wed: Hgrp-quadrilaterals
Thurs: whole group-right triangle and right
angle finder
SOLs: Math
1.12

The student will identify and trace, describe,

and sort plane geometric figures (triangle,
square, rectangle, and circle) according to
number of sides, vertices, and right angles.

1.13

The student will construct, model, and

describe objects in the environment as
geometric shapes (triangle, rectangle, square,
and circle) and explain the reasonableness of
each choice.

shapes that fit what your description is and

have them tell you what your rule is. (it is a
triangle, or it is a quadrilateral)
6. To extend, ask for them to explain what a
quadrilateral is and show you examples. How
many verticies/points do they have?
7. To extend the game, ask for students to put
cards in the middle that are described by
their verticies.
Lesson 2: Oct 24 (Hgrp)
1. What is a triangle?
2. Have a student draw me a triangle on a dry
erase board. Have a geoboard out and ask a
student to make that triangle on the
geoboard. Ask a different student to draw a
different kind of triangle. Have a different
student make it on the geoboard. Whatever
triangle is left, you draw it and make it on the
geoboard. Overall, (you are looking for
unequal, equilateral, right angles, and
isosceles)

3. There are many different kinds of triangles.

What is a right angle? Does anyone know? I
like to think of a right angle like when you are
riding your bike down the sidewalk and you
turn onto a different street. (show that on the
corner of a page). You turn completely
sideways. That angle is called a right angle.
Youll learn more about right angles as you
get into 2nd and 3rd grade, but right now we
are going to make a right angle finder.
4. To make a right angle finder you need a true
right angle. A right angle is a corner of a
rectangle or square. It has a measurement of
90 degrees, but you will learn more about
that in other grades. Show the students your
index card with a square corner and tell them
that it is your handy dandy right angle finder.
It will help you find right angles anywhere you
go.
5. Create the right angle finder, write it on the
front, and decorate. Ask them to leave it with
you to have it laminated for future use around
the classroom. (A future use could be in the
Gumshoe Review to get out the right angle
finder and look around the room/make a list
of right angles)
Lesson 3: Oct. 25 (Hgrp) Problem Solving.
Work through the 3 word problems with the
students. I think we will only get through 2 but I
have an extra for those who finish quick. For
students who may be super fast, write a word
problem on the spot or have that student help a
struggling student.

MATH, October 21-25, 2013

Differentiation:
Lesson 1: Have struggling student sort shapes
into two different groups and color in the points/
verticies. (they will need a paper copy)
Lesson 2: Right angle finder
Have struggling student make triangles on the
geoboard. Still have them create the right angle
finder and look around the room to find right
angles.
