How does knowing how to sequence make me a better reader?
What are the signal words for sequencing?
How can I use story clues to help me sequence important events in a story?
Why is sequencing important in a story?
IV.
Instructional Objective:
Students will be able to identify events in a story and put them in sequential
order.
Students will be able to use signal words when writing events in sequential order.
V.
Instructional Procedures: BDA
Before I begin the lesson I will explain the objectives of the lesson to the students
and introduce sequencing and its definition. Then I will go through a list of signal
words that authors use to help readers understand sequential order of what is
being read. Next, the students will be given a list of 5 events and they will need to
read through them and figure out what came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, and we
will discuss what clues they used. The next activity of the lesson will be turn and
talk to a partner and discuss the sequential order of another list of events and in
addition to finding the correct order of events, they will have to use signal words
that will help a reader know the order of events when reading. Last, the students
will read a short passage to themselves and on an exit ticket write down answers
to 3 short answer questions that relates to the sequential order of the passage.
Upon completing the last task, the students will be put into groups of 3-4 students
and complete Center work that relates to the story of the week and the skill of
sequencing of events. I will sit in on one of the groups and help lead the activity.
VI.
Materials and Equipment
SmartBoard, Powerpoint file, Computers and Center resources
VII.
Assessment/Evaluation:
Turn & Talk assessment- the students will talk and turn to a partner and decide
the sequence of events and use signal words to put the events in order.
Exit Ticket: the students will have to read a short passage and will have to
answer 3 short answer questions about the sequence of events from the
passage.
VIII.
Differentiation: Individualized Activities:
Students will be working in Centers today. They are broken down into groups of
3-4 and will rotate through activities such as vocabulary, on-level reading, word
works, skills, writing and computers. They will spend approx. 35 minutes in each
center before rotation to the next center.
IX.
Technology:
Due to limitation of technology because of PARCC testing and no chromebooks
in the room, there will be limited technology for this lesson. The 3-4 students in
the computer center will log onto [Link] and use their spelling words in
completing 2 activities then they will use their vocabulary words to create a
google slides presentation of the vocabulary word, a picture respresenting the
word and the word used in the sentence.
X.
Self-Assessment
I will ask myself the following:
1. What went well in this lesson? Why?
2. What problems did I experience? Why?
3. What could I have done differently?
4. What did I learn from this experience that will help me in the future?
5. Were my activities aligned with objectives?
6. Did I anticipate/prevent likely misconceptions?
7. Was my assessment aligned with objectives?
