Introduction
What is poverty? Why is it bad? Do you care about poverty?
Poverty the state of being extremely poor is one of the
biggest issues globally. It continues to take the lives of many
innocent people, including children and adults. there are many
organizations that try to help, but even so it is a big problem.
You will learn the causes and eects of poverty, where it is,
and how you can help. Hopefully, you will be inspired to do
something about it.

Chapter 1: Causes and Eects of Poverty

There are many causes of poverty, like economy, education, divorce, disease,
war, and natural disasters. I'm going to tell you a little bit about them.
Economy
One cause of poverty is changing trends in a country's economy, which can
make people s money worth less, therefore they don t have enough money to
aord what they had before.
Education
A lack of education is another cause of poverty, because if one did not have
enough education he could not get a good job. Education ghts poverty,
because if one is educated they can have lots of potential. Therefor a bad
education leads to jobs that pay exceptionally low, which can lead to poverty.
Divorce
High divorce rate is a problem, because it causes feminization of poverty,
meaning that it more puts women in poverty than men, as there are more
women who stay home than men.
Disease
Epidemic diseases (such as AIDS and malaria) can cause sickness, because
the medication can be expensive, and if someone dies that could stop income.
It also gets the attention of governments, and people spend more time trying
to cure the disease then they do ghting poverty and helping people who
need it.
Wars and battle
Other things that cause poverty are wars and battle, because it will make
countries much poorer because the money it takes to make weapons and
equipment. Another reason is the damage could wipe out homes, leaving
people homeless because they don't have a home, and they probably just lost
all of there belongings so they loose a lot of money. Wars will also get the
government involved so that they spend less time ghting poverty.

Natural disasters
Similarly, natural disasters such as earthquakes and tidal waves can cause
poverty for the same reasonleaving people devastated and homeless. But, it
will not only put people IN poverty, it will make it harder for people to get OUT
of poverty. Think about this: if the U.S. Has 1/10 of the population in poverty
and an earthquake hits, it makes 1/2 of the population in poverty. That is a lot
harder to x then having 1/10 of the population in poverty. It's easier to help
one person then ve people, right?
How Poverty Started
Now you are probably wondering, when did poverty start? Well, there was no
real time and place where poverty started, but think about this; in a wolf pack,
the alpha male and female will get the best food, and their kids will get the
next best food, and so on all the way down the line until it gets to the lowest
wolf, who eventually will starve because he does not have enough to eat.
Maybe that is how poverty came to be, but with minor dierences to
accommodate humans.

Chapter 2: Where Poverty Is

Poverty is just about everywhere. In the USA it is worst in Mississippi, with a
poverty rate of 20%. Driven by its high poverty rate, Mississippi comes in low
in health and wellness and has one of the highest rates in obesity, heart
disease and diabetes. Whilst there may not be poverty in Winnetka, there is
poverty in Chicago, and even more in Illinois. Below is a picture, showing
where poverty is in the world.
This picture
shows that
the blue
areas are
where
poverty is
under two
percent out
of the worlds
population.
The light blue areas is where poverty ranges from 2% to 5%. The yellow areas
show where poverty is from 6% to 20%. The orange areas show where
poverty ranges from 21% to 40%. The red areas show where poverty is from
41% to 60%. The dark red areas show where poverty is from 61% to 80%.
Also, the areas in Africa that are dark red are in big trouble. 80% of the
population is in poverty! Thats 8 out of 10 people.
Why is poverty so bad in some places?
Well... in places like Africa it can comes from a culture of poverty, like poverty
handed down over time. For example, someone's parents may have been in
poverty as kids, and now their kids are in poverty.
The more technology and things we make, the more money we spend on
these things, the more we further exclude places in Africa that are in poverty.
For example, if Apple makes the iPhone 11 it will sell at high prices. People will
pay those prices, so other company's will raise their prices, then everything's
price gets raised. This will result in the poor people having even less money,
because everything costs so much.

Chapter 3: Things to Know About Poverty

In 2012, 13.6% of men lived in Poverty in the U.S. Also, 16.3% of women lived
in poverty.
The poverty rate for married couples in 2012 was only 6.3%, but the poverty
rate for people living with a disability was 28.4%. That s 4.3 million people
living with a disabilityin poverty.
In 2012, 21.8% of all children lived in Poverty in the U.S.that s over 1 in
every 5 children.
Seniors had a poverty rate of 9.1%, but with costs of healthcare it was 14.8.
The poverty rate in metropolitan areas is 14.5%, while in rural areas the
poverty rate is 17.7%.
34.2% of the populationor 106.4 millionlive close to poverty, with incomes
less than two times that of their poverty lines.
In 2012, the USDA (U.S department of agriculture) estimated that 14.5% (or
17.6 million) of US households were food insecuremeaning that they had
difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their
members due to a lack of resources. Rates of food insecurity were higher
than the national average for households with incomes near or below the
Federal poverty line.
By race
Blacks had a poverty rate of 27.2%, while hispanics (of any race) had the
second highest poverty rate 25.6%. whites had a poverty rate of 9.7%, and
asians had a poverty rate at 11.7%.
Poverty lines in the United States
A poverty line is an imaginary line, like the equator. Its the level which if below
one would be considered in poverty.
For one person the poverty line was 11,670, so if they had that much money
or less they were in poverty. For two people, the poverty line was $15,730. A
family of five people: $27,910. And a family of six people is $31,970.
-6.6% of the populationor nearly 20.4 million peoplelive in deep poverty,
with incomes at only 50% of their poverty lines.

Chapter 4: How You Can Help Poverty

excerpted from http://www.jewishinseattle.org/programs-initiatives/focusght/resources/12-ways-ght-poverty
Here are 11 Ways to Fight Poverty in Your Community
There are so many different ways in which we can fight poverty in our
community. Here are just a few suggestions of both long-term and short-term
solutions that you can implement in your area.
1. Educate Yourself
A nationwide lack of affordable housing, sad state of public education, lack of
public transportation systems linking commercial and residential
neighborhoods, racial injustice, domestic violence, and policies restricting
contraception all contribute to an endless cycle of poverty that pervades
every state in this country.
2. Donate
You can donate food, money, clothing, toiletry items, old furniture, toys and
magazines.
3. Volunteer
You can volunteer with kids, families, the elderly, the disabled, the homeless,
women, and the mentally ill; in shelters, soup kitchens, community centers,
after school programs, and employment centers. You can teach literacy,
resume development, job training courses, ESL, computer class, coach sports,
serve food, and provide counseling.
4. Join a Campaign
There are a number of different local and national campaigns that you can
join to help combat poverty. Even better, you can ask your local synagogue,
church, youth group, community center, workplace, or school to do the same.
5. Organize a Rally
A rally is great way to raise awareness about homelessness in your
community. A large gathering of people shows solidarity for a cause, and is a
great way to get the attention of the media, businesses, local legislature, and
other concerned community members.
6.Hold a Benefit Concert
A concert is a great way to raise a good deal of money to help combat
poverty, and if the music is good, it can draw a huge crowd!
7. Host a 5k Run

Poverty

A 5k run is great way to heighten awareness, get the community involved in

something constructive, and raise money to donate towards poverty
initiatives.
8. Write or Start a petition
Petitions are fantastic ways to create change in your local government or
neighborhood. You can choose to fight a bad policy, or create a good one.
You can write your own petition, or help to propagate one already in
existence.
9. Write an Article
An article to your local newspaper about homelessness in your community is a
great way to spread the word, and to personalize the matter with statistics
and facts that hit close to home. And not only will you educate others, you will
also learn a lot in the process.
10. Put Up Posters on Campus
If you want to educate your fellow students, try getting approval to hang
posters with facts and statistics about homelessness and poverty around
your school's campus. Facts that hit close to home are one of the best ways
to mobilize individuals to make a difference. Don't forget to include ideas for
ways to take action!
11. Donate Leftovers
Ever notice how much leftover food is thrown away in your school or
workplace cafeteria every day? Try speaking to your school or oce
administration to nd a way to donate all of that leftover food to a local
shelter or food bank. There is no need to waste so much when so many
people are hungry.
Conclusion
Now that you know about poverty, an important fact to remember is that 80%
of people live on 10$ a day or less, and 4.3 million people with a disability live
in poverty. That means someone who has a physical disability will not be able
to do much about it. Also, someone with a mental disability will struggle
learning, because (s)he may not get a good education. Do you know anyone
with a disability? Now, imagine them without anyone to help them, and in
poverty. Would you do something?
