Definition:
Equalization is the process of adjusting the
balance between frequency component
within electronic signal
The circuit or equipment used for
equalization is called as an Equalizer
These devices boosts or cut the energy of
specific frequency band
Types of Equalizer:
there are two types of Equalizer
I.
II.
III.
IV.
Graphic Equalizer
Parametric Equalizer
Viterbi Equalizer
Turbo Equalizer
G raphic Equalizer:
The function of graphic equalizer is to
provide boost and cut at the bass and
treble extremes , as well as within the
intermediate frequency
The Equalizer is implemented with the
arrays of narrow band filters whose
individual response are adjusted by
vertical slide pots arranged side by
side
as to provide a graphic visualization
of the equalized response due to this
Advantages:
Fixed center frequency
Fixed bandwidth
Adjustable boost/cut(+/-10 to 15 dB)
Many bands (in the range between
27-31)
Technologies:Following are the techologies used in designing
of the Graphic Equalizer
Variable-Q: Bandwidth varies as a function of
boost/cut
Constant-Q: Bandwidth varies much
less then above
True response:Bandwidth does not vary with
boost/cut
Param etric equalizer:
It attempts to reverse the distortion
increased by a signal transmitted
through channel
It reduces inter symbol interference to
allow recovery of the transmit
symbols and improve receiver
performance
The efficiency of siso signal
processing algorithms and iterative
Advantages:
Adjustable frequency
Adjustable bandwidth
Analog: few band (3 to 6)
Digital : many bands (in the range
between 10 to 20 or infinite in case of
arbitary magnitude design )
Microcontroller/microprocessor based:
In this equalizer the gain can be done
through programming
It is available in monolithic IC package
According to user requirement
modification can be done in this
equalizers
Features:
Real time analyzer and signal sources
Dynamic range better than 108 dB
Sample rates from 32 kHz to 96 kHz
Operates with single +3.3V power supply and
low power standby
Applications:
To provide a high quality digital
system control for volume
To perform parametric equalization to
correct the frequency response of
loudspeaker or microphone
To implement an active crossover for
multi-way loudspeaker system
To adjust the bass and treble control
throughput without experiencing any
pops, clicks and artifacts
