Calibration of Bourdon Tube Pressure Gauge

This document describes an experiment to calibrate a Bourdon tube pressure gauge using a dead weight tester apparatus. The experiment aims to help students understand how Bourdon tube pressure gauges work and how to calibrate one using a known applied pressure from weights. Safety precautions are outlined, including following lab regulations, having instruction from lecturers or experienced assistants, and knowing the location of emergency equipment. The calibration process uses a loading unit with weights and a piston cylinder to apply increasing pressures to the Bourdon tube gauge via an oil-filled pipe, allowing the gauge to be checked against the known pressures.

EXPERIMENT EL2-2: CALIBRATION OF

PRESSURE GAUGE
1.0LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this experiment, the student should be able:
1.1 To understand the working of Bourdon tube pressure gauge.
1.2 To understand the process of calibration of Bourdon tube pressure
with a known applied pressure.

2.0 APPARATUS/EQUIPMENT

3.0 SAFETY AND HEALTH

3.1 Make sure the student follow the laboratory or workshop safety

regulators.
3.2 Experiment must be conduct by lectures or experience lab assistance.
3.3 Always know the hazards associated with the materials that are being
utilized in the lab.
3.4 Be familiar with the location of emergency equipment-fire alarm, fire
extinguisher, emergency eye wash and safety shower. Know the
appropriate emergency responses procedures.
4.0THEORY
A dead weight tester apparatus uses known traceable weights to apply
pressure to a fluid for checking the accuracy of readings from a pressure
gauge. As seen in figure 2.1, the apparatus is set up for calibration of the
pressure gauge. This device basically comprises two units. A Bourdon Gauge
that is to be calibrated serves as the pressure measuring unit. A bourdon
gauge is already fitted to the experiment. The loading unit comprises several
weights and a cylinder with a piston. Once the zero point of a bourdon gauge
has been checked, the weight support is re-inserted into the cylinder of the
pressure gauge unit. An increase in the loading results in the pressure. The
loading unit is connected to the pressure measuring unit via an oil-filled
pipe. The Bourdon Gauge can thus indicate the increase
