Adaptations
Species must be adapted to their habitat.
What are adaptations?
A modification that helps a species survive
in its habitat.
Can you come up with some ways
that humans have adapted?
What is a habitat?
A habitat is an environment in which a
specific species lives.
Adaptations can be classified as either being:
physical
behavioural
Adaptations help species survive in many
different ways.
Here are 6 of the major reasons for
adaptations...
1 - Climate
2 - Movement (how they move around)
3 - Food (what and how they eat)
4 - Reproduction
5 - Protection against predators
6 - Communication
Lets see if you can identify the
type and reason of the following
adaptations...
Antarctic seals have
warm fur and a
thick layer of
blubber.
Ducks have
webbed feet.
Cacti are able to
store water in their
stems and roots.
Koalas are the only animals
that are able to eat and
properly digest eucalyptus
leaves (they are toxic to
others).
The ruby-throated
hummingbird has
a long and slender
beak.
Beavers build lodges out
of branches and mud,
which helps insulate it.
White-tailed deer raise
their tails to warn
others of danger.
The harmless scarlet
king snake, right,
mimics the coloring
and patterns of the
deadly coral snake, on
the left.
Fireflies produce light
to attract a mate.
The venus flytrap have
trigger hairs inside to
detect when there is
something inside to let
it know when to close.
Swans do an elaborate
dance to find a perfect
mate.
Dolphins whistle to
stay in contact with
other dolphins.
Skunks spray a
liquid from their
anal glands to ward
off other creatures
around.
