Before you read
Using the worksheets
Draw a circle on the board and tell the class that this is
the Earth. Label the North Pole and South Pole. Then
draw a line around the middle for the equator and label
it. Brainstorm animals that live in the different places
or say the names of animals and invite children to tell
you where they live, for example: Teacher: A penguin.
Child: It lives at the South Pole.
Worksheet 1
While you read
Stop and ask comprehension questions. For example,

Page 16:
Page 18:
Page 21:
Whats his name? Where does he live?
Who are his friends?
What is Bess doing?
What does Ozzie give Waldo?
Where is Summer Sun going?
Who is the postcard from?
After you read
Play a memory game. Quickly draw a suitcase on the
board and label it. Then write: Im going on holiday and
in my suitcase theres a hat. Choose a volunteer to read
the sentence and add another item. For example, Im
going on holiday and in my suitcase theres a hat and a
scarf. The children take turns to remember the list and
add another item to the list.
Crack the code and write the page number.
Explain to the class that this is a code. Draw the
pictures for hello on the board (a teddy bear / a sun
/ a car / a car / a bear paw) and elicit the letter that
each picture represents. Tell the children to form
pairs and work out the code sentences together.
Then they look at the book to complete them with
the correct page numbers. Invite pairs to read their
sentences to the class.
Worksheet 2
Finish Summer Suns postcard; then colour and write
your own.
Invite the children to tell you places they have been
on holiday. Write their answers on the board. Then
ask if they sent postcards when they were on holiday.
Ask them to look at the worksheet and explain that
Summer Suns postcard isnt complete. Tell the
children to complete the postcard, referring back to
the book. Next, they decorate and write their own
postcard below.

Give out the worksheet and ask if anyone can
remember the name of the object in the drawing (a
suitcase). Show the class how to cut out and fold the
suitcase. Then invite volunteers to read out the list of
contents. The children read and draw the items inside
the suitcase. Finally they colour it all.
Ozzie and Summer Sun
Extension
Ask the children to use the code from worksheet 1 to
write a message on a piece of paper. Children swap
messages and decode them.
Make two class posters: Hot weather and Cold
weather. Brainstorm different clothes that you wear
on hot and cold days, different things you do, (skiing,
sunbathing) and different things you eat (ice
cream, soup). The children draw and label their
suggestions and add them to the posters.
