The fifth grade students participated in the Hour of Code, a global event introducing computer science basics. The Hour of Code aimed to show students that computer science involves more than just programming and can be engaging and collaborative. It also aimed to dispel misconceptions that computer science is just for people who sit alone coding all day. The document encourages asking students about what they learned from the Hour of Code experience.

Hour of Code

This week students took part in

the Hour of Code, a global
movement reaching tens of
millions of students in 180+
countries. This event was an
introduction to computer science,
designed to demystify code and
show that anybody can learn the
basics. Computer science is one
of the most amazing art forms in
the world.
When most people think of
computer science, they generally
envision programming. Often,
they assume that the field is full
of people who sit alone at their
computers all day, staring at large
screens and drinking coffee. In
reality, computer science is an
engaging and collaborative
activity that includes far more
than the ones and zeros for which
it has become famous.
Ask your student to share what
they have learned through hour of
code. [Link]

Classroom Updates
Its officially winter and there are so many changes ahead. First
our student intern from Keene State, Kathryn Sleeman, wrapped
up her time with us. We learned so much from her and wish her
all the best.
Our class also started a new writing unit called Picturing Writing,
a dynamic art-and-literature based approaches to writing
developed by Beth Olshansky to meet the needs of students.
Check out our paintings around the times of the day.
Finally our class will be welcoming a new full time Keene State
College intern, Meagan Whalen, to our class. She joins us this
January. We look forward to learning new things as our classroom
community continues to grow.
