Seed Sorting Activity for Preschoolers

This activity plan is for a math/science lesson for 3-5 year olds on sorting and graphing different seed types. The goals are for children to sort seeds onto construction paper, graph their results, and count a minimum of 5 seed types. Materials needed include different seed packs, construction paper, fruit, and glue. The teacher will introduce the activity by explaining how fruit starts from seeds. Children will work in groups to sort and graph seeds from different fruits, counting and comparing amounts. At the end, children will clean up and transition to the next activity by pretending to plant seeds on a journey. References used in planning include a book on anti-bias education.

I will buy the seeds from Hope Depot, and use the construction paper that is already in the
classroom.
Procedure: (step by step)

*Beginning
I will introduce the activity to the children during large group. I will say to the
children to get them interested in to activity is How many children love fruit,
well today you will see how fruit starts out. I will introduce the materials to use
by showing the children the seeds, and how to glue to seeds onto the construction
paper. I will demonstrate to take the glue and squeeze just a dime size glue
amount onto the construction paper, then place the seed onto the construction
paper. I will tell the children to be safe when using the glue, and not to eat the
seeds. I will get the children started by showing the children the seeds, and
explain how the seed becomes a fruit.
*Middle:
I will support the children in the begin with the materials by showing the group
the seeds in categories by fruit and vegetables. They will also demonstrate how
they know to group the seeds, and were to place them. The question I will ask the
children is how many seeds of fruits and vegetables do you have. I will also ask to
count out how many seeds they have and I will write it on their paper. By doing
this I will say even through some seeds have a bigger or smaller group they are
still all seeds. How I will encourage the children is by working together is
showing them that most fruit have more than one seed to help to grow, so maybe
some of the children can work together to help each other. I will go around the
table and ask each child show me how many seeds do you have in the apple
section and graph that area. Also I will ask the children how they graph the
difference of seeds.
*End:
I will tell the children there is only 5 min. left, then we will be doing another fun
activity. I will introduce the children to clean up by showing them how to clean up the
seeds, and put their work in their cubby.I will transition the children to the next activity
by telling the children to act as if you are going on a long journey to plant seeds. You
have to slowly walk so you dont have any of your supplies fall. There will be a teacher
in circle time where the children can sit down and play sing along until the next activity.
