Introduction
Poytonc Greek s not a anguage tsef but rather a representaton form of the
Greek Language. It s named Polytonic due to the use of mutpe (poy-) dacrtc
marks, as opposed to Monotonic that uses a snge (mono-) dacrtc mark.
Poytonc scrpt may be utsed n wrtng a phases of the Greek anguage
throughout ts 3,000+ years of evouton. Very broady these phases may
be dvded nto 4 categores:
(a) The Homerc scrpt - Can only be written with the Polytonic script,
(b) The Cassca Heenc scrpt - Can only be written with the Polytonic script,
(c) The Neo-Heenc "Katharevousa" (Purstc) scrpt - Can only be written with the
Polytonic script, and
(d) Modern Greek (a.k.a. The Contemporary Neo-Heenc scrpt/"Demotk") - Can
be written with both Polytonic and Monotonic scripts.
Currenty there s a rather mted communty of peope (mosty academc schoars
and cergy) that are st actvey usng the Poytonc scrpt whe wrtng
contemporary Greek anguage (tem d above). The ma|orty s usng the
Monotonc scrpt (ths s the omca form).
The Greek Poytonc System s a combnaton of a speca Greek keyboard ayout
(Greek Poytonc) and few fonts contanng a the addtona characters (dacrtca
and punctuaton marks). For the system to functon t s mperatve for the user to
have the PC ocae set to Greek. Chapter I Greek Polytonic System Setup
expans how to verfy that the user ocae s set to Greek and - f not - how to do
so.

Dacrtca & Punctuaton Marks
1. Chapter III Greek Polytonic !ey"oard States presents the Greek
Poytonc keyboard ayout at a of ts states, ncudng a the speca
characters and symbos.
2. Any dacrtca marks may be reproduced wthout the accompanyng etter
smpy by httng the dot key after the dead-key combnaton. For exampe
n order to reproduce Dasa Vara press Shft+\ & . resutng to . Ths s
true for a dacrtca mark combnatons except those ncudng an
Ypogegrammen/Prosgegrammen.
3. As more than the usua key combnatons are used to cater for the extra
dacrtca and punctuaton marks, n order to reproduce the speca
characters on the key faces, ht the spacebar after the respectve key
combnaton. For exampe to reproduce } press Shft+| & Spacebar.

Key Combnatons
A key combnatons of the Greek Poytonc System are depcted n Chapter I#
Greek Polytonic !ey Com"inations. The keyboard needs to be actvated
(togged to) before t functons. Pease note that a key combnatons nvovng
the Alt refer to the rght-sde Alt desgnated as AltGr, whereas the ones nvovng
the Shi't key may use the Shi't key one any keyboard sdes. The Left At+Left
Shft combnaton s usuay reserved for Input Language toggng.
