Debate studies 4ill include analysis o/ current contro2ersial issues0 methods and materials o/ research0 e2idence0
a11lied lo"ic and reasonin"0 construction o/ debate cases0 audience analysis0 and the use o/ strate"y.

hi"her le2el debate and 1ublic s1ea3in" s3ills. Ad2anced Debate is o//ered /or concurrent colle"e credit to =uniors and seniors.

A Auarterly $artici1ation "rade 4ill be assi"ned. Attendance0 1artici1ation in discussions and 1ractice rounds0
a11ro1riate audience beha2ior0 and /ollo4in" directions 4ill determine 1oints assi"ned.
:raded assi"nments are based on the ty1e o/ debate8s1eech a student chooses but 4ill include: research
assi"nments0 debate cases0 s1eech assi"nment com1letion0 tournament attendance0 and the /inal class 1ro=ect.
Students are re<uired to 3ee1 a 1ort/olio %!-rin" binder' 4ith class notes0 tournament re/lections0 handouts0
"raded 4or3 and assi"nments. $ort/olios 4ill be chec3ed re"ularly and are 4orth a total o/ 00 1oints.
Su11lies:
Students 4ill need a binder 4ith 1a1er to ser2e as a 1ort/olio. Students are encoura"ed to ha2e le"al 1ads and
di//erent colored 1ens %red @ blac38blue' /or tournaments. 7ther su11lies0 based on indi2idual e2ents0 may be
needed.

Students 4ho attend more than one tournament become debate team members. Membershi1 on the debate team
can 1ro2ide you 4ith an academically stimulatin" a/ter-school acti2ity and can create 1ositi2e e-1eriences0 both
no4 and /or the /uture.
A/ter-School $ractice:
.n addition to class time0 one day a 4ee3 4ill be desi"nated as Team Night. Students are encoura"ed to attend
4ee3ly i/ they =oin the team0 or as much as their schedule 1ermits. 7ther o11ortunities /or 1re1aration 4ill be
1ro2ided and are a2ailable by a11ointment.
Auali/yin" /or State @ Bationals:
Students 4ho <uali/y /or the State and8or Bational 5ournament are e-1ected to attend. Auali/yin" students must
1artici1ate in /undraisin" acti2ities in order to /und o2erni"ht tri1s to <uali/yin" tournaments.
,undraisin":
Students must 1urchase a S1irit $ac3 as 1art o/ the co-curricular 1ro"ram. 5he $ac3 1ro2ides /or their
membershi1 to the Bational ,orensics 6ea"ue %B,6'0 and the ability to attend all non-<uali/yin" tournaments.
5he cost o/ the $ac3 is C* /or students 4ho are not members o/ the B,6. Students 4ho ha2e 1re2iously 1aid
their li/etime membershi1 /ee to the B,6 do not ha2e to 1ay the S1irit $ac3 /ee. .n Addition to the S1irit $ac30
students are as3ed to 1artici1ate in the /undraisin" acti2ities each semester. ,undraisin" may include but is not
limited to: concessions0 2arious 1roduct sales0 hosted tournaments and other 2enues determined by the coachin"
sta// to hel1 meet the teams? /inancial obli"ations.
,amily $artici1ation:
A $arent Meetin" 4ill be held early durin" the /all semester at the school auditorium. As the date "ets closer0
you 4ill be noti/ied as 4ell as your 1arents. 5he 1ur1ose o/ the meetin" is to 1re1are /amilies /or s1eech and
debate 1artici1ation. All 1arents are encoura"ed to attend but the meetin" is 1articularly im1ortant /or students
1lannin" to become team members or 1arents 4ho ha2e <uestions about tournament 1artici1ation.
Debate 5eam /amilies are as3ed to 2olunteer to assist 4ith acti2ities to hel1 reduce the amount o/ tournament
/ees 1assed on to indi2idual students. ,amilies can hel1 in the /ollo4in" 4ays: 2olunteer to =ud"e at
tournaments0 or"aniDe and assist 4ith /undraisin" acti2ities0 donate needed su11lies0 and abo2e all else0
