Composition Brief 1 - Graphic Score

Compose a graphic score lasting between 2-3 minutes which explores the following areas:

The balance between repetition, variation and contrast
Small and large scale structural forms
Texture

The piece may be programmatic if you wish or simply have a theme, and credit will be awarded for
creativity in the visual as well as sonic elements.

Deadline: Thursday 23
rd
October

The following list highlights the areas I will focus on when marking the piece.
Repetition / Variation / Contrast
Ability to create strong, memorable motifs
Evidence of development of ideas
o Transposition
o Augmentation/Diminution
o Variation
o Articulation / Timbre
Good overall balance between repetition and variation as well as contrast

Small Scale Structure
Evidence of repetition, variation and contrast on the motif and phrase level, perhaps making
use of one of the following forms or similar
o aab
o abac
o abab
Large Scale Structure
It is suggested to pick one of the following forms and divide your piece up early on
o Ternary (ABA)
o Rondo (ABACA)
Use of bridge / intro / outro sections
Whether or not you use these you must ensure your piece still has:
o Shape / direction
o At least two contrasting sections
o Repetition of at least one section with ideally some development
Texture
Explore a wide range of the following,
o Register
o Timbre
o Dynamics
o Articulation
o Silence
Varying texture over time
How you move between textures
Varying the number of layers and never exceeding 3
