Blog post; How does Dyers Star Theory apply to our band?
Dyers Star theory compares the difference between pop performer and pop
star, indicating that pop stars have an identity or persona that extends further
than their musicianship unlike the simple pop performer.
It is the management and record labels job to manicure a pop performer into a
pop star. This can easily be done with the use of magazine coverage and a few
liberal and interesting stories of the performer mingling with actual stars.
Dyer suggests that a star is an image not a real person that is constructed..out of
a range of materials such as advertising, magazines etc. The stars will be
constructed to have identifying physicalities that can be branded and parodied,
such as Justin Beibers bangs. A true star has longevity. Considering Dyers
theory, we realise that many stars today do not tick all the boxes that Dyer has
carefully laid out in order to classify one as a star.

Currently, the talent that record companies are producing are in too large an
amount to actually spend enough time to develop each one individually. The
conveyor belt approach of distributing lots of attempts, hoping that one will
stick around, isnt working.
Stars beliefs and opinions outside music are used to help create their persona.
This persona creates a stronger following as fans are able to identify with these
ideologies. As stars develop, they begin to develop much on the records
construct, but the construct has a foundation in the real. Stars are also able to
express their ideologies and portray a persona through their lyrics.
How we can utilise these theories with our band.
We need to use Dyers theories in order to properly create a band that will have
longevity. The music video itself will help propel the bands buzz and create an
aura of stardom.
We will create fictional social media accounts in order to give the band a persona
and give them ideologies that fans can relate to and follow. The lyrics of the song
itself also portray the band. Considering our analysis of the lyrics, we will
portray our band to have a cheeky confidence, but grounded opinions on the
cutthroat nature of the music industry.
There is also room to create fictional stories in magazines that the band could
post to their social media to help create the star feel about them. It has proved
very hard for the large record companies, with their economy of scale power (the
ability to spend ridiculous money on advertising and promotion) to keep
longevity. From this, we can expect our hardest task to be creating a star that has
longevity for years to come. But, by then we will have got our grade anyway.
