Riverside Police Drowning Prevention Tips

The Riverside Police Department is providing water safety tips as summer begins and people spend more time in and around bodies of water. Chief Thomas Weitzel and Lt. Bill Gutschick emphasize that drowning is preventable but a leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, with most incidents occurring in familiar settings like home pools. They stress the importance of constant adult supervision when children are near water, as drowning can occur silently and quickly within seconds or minutes. Tips include never taking your eyes off children near water, not relying on equipment to ensure safety, and learning CPR.

Riverside Police Offer Drowning Prevention Tips
This time of year, citizens flock to local lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds and pools for summer recreation,"
said Thomas Weitzel, Riverside Police Chief. Its important for everyone to follow basic water safety
rules, and its especially important that all children in and around water have responsible, sober adult
supervision. Chief Weitzel went on to say, Riverside is a community that has many in ground and above
ground backyard pools as well as the Des Plaines River running through the Village and as such water
safety is a must.
Drowning is a preventable cause of childhood death, said Lt. Bill Gutschick. At home, on vacation, at
the public pool, it is the responsibility of adults to supervise children around water and to make sure
children arent put at risk by unattended drowning hazards, like buckets of water and wading pools.
Safety Tips
With summer here, Riverside Police want to remind you that drowning is the leading cause of injury or
death in children ages 1 to 4.
Statistics show that most drowning incidents happen in familiar settings, like the family pool or the pool at
the home of a friend or neighbor.
A child can drown in a matter of seconds not minutes.
Drowning happens quickly & quietly
Children dont make noise as they go under water - they sink quietly.

Children under the water lose consciousness within 2 minutes.
