GREASE
Semi- solid lubricant consisting of a high viscosity mineral oil and
metallic soap with a filler.
Soaps are compounds of a metal base--calcium, sodium,
aluminium--with fatty acids obtained from animal or vegetable
Fillers are lead, zinc, graphite, molybdenum disulphide. Fillers
enable grease to withstand shock and heavy loads.
Function of grease:
(1) Will stay put
(2) Will lubricate
(3) Will act as a seal
(4) Useful for inaccessible parts.
Application of grease:
Calcium soap greases are water resistant and have a melting point
of about 95°C and are suitable for low speeds. Sodium soap
greases have a high melting point, about 200°C are suitable for
high speeds but emulsify in water. Aluminium soap grease has a
high load carrying capacity.
