Types and Functions of Grease

Grease is a semi-solid lubricant consisting of a high viscosity mineral oil, metallic soap, and filler. Metallic soaps like calcium, sodium, and aluminum combine with fatty acids to thicken the oil. Fillers such as lead, zinc, and graphite are added to help grease withstand shock and heavy loads. Grease functions by staying put, providing lubrication, acting as a seal, and being useful for lubricating inaccessible parts. Different types of grease like calcium and sodium soap greases have varying properties suitable for low or high speeds and temperatures, with aluminum soap grease having high load carrying capacity.

GREASE

Semi- solid lubricant consisting of a high viscosity mineral oil and

metallic soap with a filler.
Soaps are compounds of a metal base--calcium, sodium,
aluminium--with fatty acids obtained from animal or vegetable

Fillers are lead, zinc, graphite, molybdenum disulphide. Fillers

enable grease to withstand shock and heavy loads.

Function of grease:
(1) Will stay put
(2) Will lubricate
(3) Will act as a seal
(4) Useful for inaccessible parts.

Application of grease:
Calcium soap greases are water resistant and have a melting point
of about 95°C and are suitable for low speeds. Sodium soap
greases have a high melting point, about 200°C are suitable for
high speeds but emulsify in water. Aluminium soap grease has a
high load carrying capacity.
