MSM Photo-Detectors: Presented By: Mayank Jha

MSM detectors are metal-semiconductor-metal photo-detectors that consist of two back-to-back Schottky diodes. They have low dark currents, smaller capacitance than PIN detectors, and planarity. MSM detectors operate by creating an electric field between the metal contacts under forward or reverse bias that separates photo-generated carriers. They have advantages of high speed, high bandwidth, and ease of fabrication but lower responsivity and reduced active area compared to other detectors. MSM detectors made from materials like Si and GaAs are being researched to potentially compete commercially in the future.
