Definition of Anemia
Anemia is a condition in which your
blood has a lower than normal number
of red blood cells. Anemia also can
occur if your red blood cells don't
contain enough hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that
gives blood its red color. This protein
helps red blood cells carry oxygen
from the lungs to the rest of the body.
Symtoms
You may have no symptoms if the
anemia is mild. If the problem develops
slowly, symptoms that may occur first
include:
Feeling weak or tired more often than
usual, or with exercise
Headaches
Problems concentrating or thinking
If the anemia gets worse, symptoms may
include:
Blue color to the whites of the eyes
Brittle nails
Light-headedness when you stand up
Pale skin color
Shortness of breath
Lab Test
Blood tests used to diagnose some
common types of anemia may
include:
1. Red blood count
Vein blood was taken as 1 ml.
Homogenized blood with anticoagulant
EDTA.
Prepare Hayem solution 4 ml in a test
tube.
EDTA blood was added as many as 20 L.
Homogenized it. It is mixed well and then small
volume of this fluid is introduced into a counting
chamber.
By discarding few drops from the pipette and
holding it slightly inclined small volume of the fluid
is introduced under the cover s which is placed on
the counting chamber.
Place the counting chamber on the stage of the
microscope.
Switch to low power (10 x ) objective. Adjust light
and locate the large square in the center with 25
small squares.
Now switch to high power (40 x ) objective.
2. Hemoglobin Level
Vein blood was taken as 1 ml.
Homogenized blood with anticoagulant
EDTA.
Prepare reagents Drabkins 5 ml in a test
tube.
EDTA blood was added as many as 20
L.
Homogenized with otator machine.
Let it for 3 until 10 minutes.
The color intensity is read using a
spectrophotometer.
