Big Ideas:
The New Deal was President Roosevelt's response to the Great Depression.
The severity of the Great Depression led many to call for radical action.
The New Deal consisted of many programs.
The New Deal addressed unemployment, old-age insurance, farm relief, and many other aspects of American life.
The New Deal signified a great change in the relationship between the American people and the government.
Unit Goals and Objectives:
Students will be able to identify important players in crafting and implementing the New Deal, as when as articulate what their contributions to the New Deal were.
Students will be able to differentiate between and define the major components of the New Deal plan.
Students will be able to explain why the New Deal came into being. What problems existed that the New Deal programs sought to remedy? How did they plan to do so?
Students will consider whether the programs of the New Deal succeeded. This last objective will be determined through the use of critical thinking and personal reasoning,
and all students may not come to the same conclusions.
Unit Summary:
This unit is for 11th grade United States History students. It will cover a tumultuous period in American politics. In the wake of an economic collapse and the devastation of
the Dust Bowl, millions are left jobless and the average income has dropped by 40%. We will look at the steps taken by the federal government, led by President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt, to return the country to prosperity and to prevent future depressions. We will also consider how these steps impacted the nature of government in
America.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Brainstorm the problems that people faced during the
Great Depression.
Formative:
Questions: Looking at the results of the brainstorm,
what programs dealt with the problems that we
noted?
Summative:
Exam: A 30 question fill-in-the-blank exam on key
terms and people
Essay: Write 2 pages describing and evaluating an
Concept Map: In groups, refer to your guided notes to
determine whether the programs we covered fit with
FDRs plans for Relief, Reform, or Recovery.
Flashcards: Complete the flashcards on important
figures of the New Deal
Game: In class Jeopardy-style test-prep game.

Students will follow a Prezi lecture on New Deal programs, viewing all slides,
images and videos included. They will work on guided notes while viewing the
lecture, which include a matching section on program acronyms, questions on the
purposes of Relief, Reform, and Recovery, and a question on one program that
they would choose to dismiss or support.

instructions for each. Activities for the websites include answering questions
about a video, finding information in an article, reflecting on an article using
previous knowledge and current events, taking a quiz on how people felt about
the Social Security Act and then imagining how they would have reacted at the
time, and finally taking an assessment quiz.
