Anion Gap Calculation Guidance

The document discusses calculating the anion gap and whether sodium or both sodium and potassium should be used. While the textbook states only sodium should be used, the patient calculations in another section use both. Clarification is sought on which approach is correct for their own calculations.

Hi Marina, I just had a quick question regarding calculating the anion gap.

In CVRR 75 it states that we should only use sodium as the cation because it is the plasma principal cation; but in CVRR 76 when working out the anion gap for the patients it uses both sodium and potassium. I was wondering which we should use for our calculations? Thanks

Hi If information on potassium levels is also available then you should use this in your calculation as well. Marina
