Pitching, athleticism key strengths for Jefferson baseball

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] DELPHOS Doug Gearys Jefferson baseball crew finished 16-11 in 2013, including 3-6 in the competitive Northwest Conference, his third season at the helm. He bid adieu to seven performers, including five starters, from that edition of Wildcats. He will build his fourth team around four returning starters and one other letterman in hopes of staying well above the .500 mark in his varsity coaching career (39-35). This years crew will hinge around fourthyear senior Ross Thompson (pitcher/shortstop/ third base; second-team NWC; .389 batting average, 25 runs scored, 7 doubles, 22 runs batted in, 12 walks, 11 stolen bases; 3-2, 3.3 earned run average, 33 strikeouts), fourth-year senior Austin Jettinghoff (second base/pitcher; .267 BA, 3 2Bs, 13 RBIs, 12 BBs, 15 runs; 1-0, 4.32 The Jefferson varsity baseball crew for 2014 has, front from left, Gaige Rassman, ERA), senior Zavier Buzard (designated hitter; Adam Rode, Hunter Binkley, Jace Stockwell, Josh Teman and Kurt Wollenhaupt; and limited to batting due to injury; .259 BA, 4 2Bs, back, assistant coach Clay Erman, Jordan Herron, Zavier Buzard, Austin Jetting24 RBIs, 18 runs, 11 SBs) and Jordan Herron hoff, Ross Thompson, Nick Fitch, Ryan Bullinger, Jesse Stemen and head coach Doug See PITCHING , page 33 Geary. Wildcats boys track rebuilding, Lady Cats more senior-laden for new coach Ulm

March 2014 The Herald Spring Sports 3

DELPHOS Jeffersons boys track and field team will have more than a few new faces in 2014 as new head man Damon Ulm taking over for 8-year head man Larry Bub Lindeman brings back no lettermen from last springs senior-laden unit. On the Lady Wildcat side, Ulm (who replaces 7-year head man Ryan Carder at the helm) will have a lot more experienced performers as nine girls are back from a year ago. Among the major graduates from 2013 on the boys side are the likes of Cody Biglow (4 years; sprints/hurdles), eighth at State in the 110-meter hurdles and a qualifier in the 300-meter hurdles; Nick Gallmeier (4 years; sprints/relays), Jordan Barclay (4 years; sprints/hurdles/relays/high jump), Chris Truesdale (3 years; sprints/relays/pole vault), Evan Stant (2 years; shot put/discus), Quentin Wessell (2 years; shot put/discus), Austin Pruett (2 years; distance) and Zach Bland. As well, several others chose not to go out this spring. The numbers are low and the kids are young. The kids we have are working hard and will improve as the season goes, Ulm observed. Several promising newcomers will have to be leaders on this years Wildcat boys crew: Logan Gross (800, 1600, 3200), Conner Townsend (100, 200),

Stober expects more success for Lady Wildcat softball

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected]

DELPHOS Second-year Jefferson softball coach Josiah Stober figures his Lady Wildcats have nowhere to go but up in 2014. That is because his first edition struggled to an 0-18 mark (0-9 in the Northwest Conference) in 2013. With three returning starters and two more letterwinners, he has a good place to start. Hannah Sensibaugh (coming off an injury-plagued 18 months; infielder; .274 batting average), a senior, as well as fellow senior Kimber Kill (fourth year; outfielder) and junior Samantha Branham (catcher; .235 batting average, team-leading 7 walks in 2013), are the returning starters in the everyday lineup. Junior Sarah Thitoff (infielder) and classmate Shayla Rice (infielder) lettered a year ago and are expected to step into the starting lineup. The Wildcats have one huge hole to fill: ace right-hander Taylor Branham (4 years; .260 BA); along with graduates Alexis See STOBER, page 33

DELPHOS ST. JOHNS Warnecke has holes to fill for Jays hardballers
By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected]

DELPHOS Ryan Warnecke finished his first year as the St. Johns baseball coach with an 11-15 mark. In this, his second campaign for the Blue Jays, he has to rebuild with only two returning starters and one other letterman back from that squad. Those starters back are senior centerfielder Ben Wrasman (pitcher; .333 batting average, 4 doubles, 12 runs batted in, 13 runs scored) and senior pitcher TJ Hoersten (second base). Junior Gage Seffernick is the third veteran to build around at shortstop (pitcher/ outfielder) on what is expected to be a verSee WARNECKE, page 9

Our strengths are our ability to play small-ball and move runners into scoring position with the bunt and hitting to the opposite side of the field. We need to work on our consistency at the plate and staying in the game when we make mistakes.

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] DELPHOS Dave Desenberg is starting his eighth year at the helm of the St. Johns girls track and field crew. Jack DeWitt takes over Blue Jay boys track unit

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected]

DELPHOS Dr. Jay DeWitt had his share of State qualifiers and placers throughout his 10-year tenure for the St. Johns boys track and field team. His father and long-time assistant Jack DeWitt has picked up the mantle to keep that success going. He has a trio of veterans with State experience from 2013 to build his first edition of Blue Jays around: third-year senior Luke MacLennan (sprints and relays; also on the 4th-place 4x1 State team in 2012) and third-year junior Nick Martz (sprints and relays), both members of last years 4x100-meter Division III State qualifying crew, and senior Spencer Ginter, who qualified in the shot put (school record in the event). Also returning are third-year senior Aaron Hellman (distance), thirdyear senior Eric Gerberick (sprints, relays and pole vault), third-year senior Quinn Wise (sprints and relays), third-year junior Tyler Conley (middle distance and relays) and sophomore Curtis Pohlman (distance). Newcomers that DeWitt particularly expects to be solid contributors in 2014 include junior Brian Pohlman (sprints, relays and jumps), sophomore Derek Anthony (discus), sophomore Connor Britt (hurdles and relays), sophomore Trent Closson (shot put), Tyler Ledyard (sprints and relays) and classmate Evan Mohler (sprints, relays and jumps). We should be competitive in the sprints, distance and the field events, DeWitt observed. Major departures from the unit due to graduation last spring were

We have a strong senior class and some promising underclassmen. Coming into the season, we are strong in the sprints and middle distance, Desenberg noted. What we are in need of and have to address is our jumping events and the pole vault. Among those promising newcomers are freshman Carleigh Ankerman, freshman Ally Gerberick, freshman Maya Gerker and classmate Breece Rohr. The remainder of the roster has freshmen Brandy Bauldauf, Kelsi Gillespie, Baylee Lindeman, Lexi Pohlman and Shelby Wilhelm. For Desenberg, as it always seems to be for track and field coaches, the key is avoiding injuries. If we can stay healthy, we should have a successful season, he added. We hope to place in the top half of the toughest Division III league in the state (Midwest Athletic Conference) in track and field. Minster and Versailles are tough again in the conference. Veteran Lady Green softballers charged up for 2014

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] OTTOVILLE Ottoville fast-pitch softball coach Joe Modica has struggled to build the Lady Green into a steady program. Last year, he didnt have to replace a single senior from the year before. This year, he only has to find replacements for a pair of graduates: 4-year player Kenzie Martin (pitcher) and 4-year player Paige Lucas: and has 11 letterwinners back. The most experienced players come in fourth-year senior Nikki Burgei, fourth-year senior Stephanie Horstman, third-year junior Robyn Turnwald, third-year junior Courtney Von Sossan, third-year junior Haley Landwehr and third-year junior Morgan Beining. Also back for their second varsity seasons are senior Ali Eickholt, senior Emma Eickholt, sophomore Jenny Burgei, sophomore Beth Burgei and classmate Alena Horstman. We have those 11 returning letterwinners from last year and they have been working hard over the off-season to improve. Many of the girls feel we should have a good season and I feel so as well, Modica observed.

strikes. I look for that to continue again this year, Wannemacher ended. One area we have been working on a lot in practice this year is our defense. As a team, we need to cut down our unearned runs we let up per game; our goal this year is to let up less than two unearned runs per game and if we do that, it will transfer over to wins. Our goals every season are to finish over .500 and to compete in the league. If we continue to work on our weaknesses and fine-tune our strengths, we will achieve this goal. We want to get better every game and peak right at tournament. We have a great bunch of kids and I am looking forward to the season. Miller City looks to be very tough again this year but with spring baseball you never know. Any team in the PCL can win on any given night. If our kids give us their all and believe they can win every time they step on the field, we can be a real competitive team. The assistant coach is Darren Schimmoeller. Wannemacher is set to begin his tenure in a doubleheader versus Paulding at home Monday, March 29.

Inexperienced, thin Big Green embark on 2014 track season

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] OTTOVILLE Ryan Horstman is beginning his 14th season as the head coach of the Ottoville boys track and field unit. He has a two-pronged problem for 2014: only three lettermen back from 2013 and a small number of participants with 12. This is the smallest team Ive had. We will have plenty of room for improvement throughout the season, he said. He only has three veterans back, which include thirdyear senior Lucas Maag, third-year junior Colin Bendele (shot put and discus; 400-meter dash) and sophomore Drew Williams. The major hole he must fill in is the graduated Anthony Eickholt, who placed eighth at the Division III State pole vault meet. As well, others that used up their eligibility last spring are Ryan Honigford (2 years; middle distance), Logan Kortokrax (2 years; pole vault, middle distance, sprints), Dylan Klima (pole vault, sprints), Matt Burgei (sprints, shot put, discus) and Austin Meyer (sprints, long jump). One of the most promising newcomers is senior exchange student Vander Sluijs he has athletic ability and a nice work ethic. We have four events which should be strong: discus, long jump, shot put and middle distance; everything else is weak right now. With hard work and continued

Lady Green track extremely limited in experience and numbers

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] OTTOVILLE The Ottoville girls track and field unit fielded a crew of 19 last spring in head man Vaughn Horstmans 22nd season. In this, his 23rd, the scenario is vastly different; those numbers have plummeted to a mere seven. Only two of them are experienced in the sport on the Varsity level: fourth-year senior Taylor Mangas (hurdles and middle distance) and fourth-year senior Tonya Kaufman (middle distance and shot put; rehabbing a knee injury suffered during volleyball season). This year will be a work in progress; we have two letterwinners returning and the rest are first-year team members, Horstman noted. Due to the low numbers, in the small meets, we wont be able to score enough points. In the bigger meets, though, we will be able to compete better. I believe that by the end of the year, the new members will be very helpful. Those new members are senior exchange student Karin Wendeberg (sprints, distance and long jump), freshman Brooke Mangas (high jump and sprints), freshman Alexie Thorbahn (shot, discus and middle distance), freshman Maddie Knodell (pole vault and middle distance) and classmate Alicia Honigford (long jump, hurdles and middle distance). Among the departures are the graduated Tammy Wannemacher (4 years; shot Foreign & Domestic put and discus), Rachel BeinTowing Available ing (4 years; shot put and disFree Estimates cus), Abby Siefker (4 years; middle distance) and Alyssa Delong (hurdles and sprints), as well as several letterwinners from last spring that chose not to go out this season for various reasons. Veteran Musketeer baseballers prepared for successful 2014

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] FORT JENNINGS Fort Jennings baseball coach Eric Schwab had basically a senior-less roster last spring for his inaugural campaign as the Musketeer diamond leader and finished 7-16 (1-6 in the Putnam County League) after taking over for 11-year mentor Jeff Swick. He expects to have a much more veteran and senior-laden crew this time around. With only one player 4-year pitcher/ shortstop Kurt Warnecke (2-6, 6.35 earned run average, 46.1 innings pitched, 46 strikeouts; .385 batting average, 17 runs batted in) to replace due to graduation, this years crew is expected to be built around veteran performers in third-year senior Alex Vetter (infielder; .424 BA, 14 RBIs), third-year senior Ryan Rau (infielder/pitcher; 1-3, 4.67 ERA, 16 Ks, 21 IPs; 10 RBIs), third-year senior Dylan Van Loo (outfielder/pitcher; 1-3, 9.48 ERA, 17 Ks, 27 IPs, 19 walks; .236 BA), senior Bret Clay (shortstop/pitcher; 1-1), senior Josh Wittler (catcher/infielder/ pitcher; 1-1, 11 IPs) and senior Caleb Bankey (outfielder; .220 BA, 8 RBIs). Also back are experienced juniors in Mark Metzger (third year; outfielder; .351 BA, 8 RBIs, 7 stolen bases), Connor Wallenhorst (third year; outfielder; .333 BA) and Jared Hoersten (third year; infielder/outfielder/catcher; 16 BBs; 1-0). Two sophomores also earned their stripes last spring: Alex Sealts (infielder/pitcher; .205 BA) and Kyle Hellman (outfielder). With having everyone back but one senior, we have good team leadership. Everyone knows the expectations of the coaching staff and believes in the program and what we are doing, Schwab said. We lack depth, though; we have no junior varsity team and not many players. Promising newcomers include freshman Sam Vetter (catcher), freshman Ryan Hoersten (outfielder), freshman Connor Stechschulte (infielder) and classmate Austin Luebrecht (infielder/outfielder). I expect our older, experienced guys to take hold of the program and really push each other, Schwab added. They know what to do in the system now and there are no excuses. We had many games last year where we lost by 2-3 run; this year, we hope to execute our game plan and turn those games into wins for us. Last year, we went 1-6 in league play and lost four of those games by four runs or less, so we were competitive in each game. This year, we want to keep those games close and competitive and turn those close losses into wins by doing the fundamental little things that win ball games. Ryan Strickler serves as assistant coach. The Musketeers are scheduled to begin 2014 on Saturday, March 29, in doubleheader action at Lima Senior.

Musketeers sport 30 track and field participants for 2014

FORT JENNINGS Kevin Horstman has been the sole head coach for the Fort Jennings Division III boys and girls track teams The boys unit for Horstman (19 years as a coach, the 16th at Fort Jennings) will feature 15 participants and returns only two veterans from last springs sixth-place Putnam County League team (2-49 duals and invites; 16 at Districts). That number is up from the 12 of last season. This group returns senior Tyler Blankemeyer (distance), the leading scorer from last years team, and senior Garrett Berelsman (distance), both of whom are 3-year letterwinners. Also back are senior Logan Sickels (2 years; distance), junior Evan Ricker (2 years; distance), junior Tyler Ricker (distance), sophomore Alex Bereslman (distance), sophomore Drew Grone (sprints) and sophomore Dillon Schimmoeller (sprints). Among the notable losses are Adam Kleman (2-year letterwinner; mid-distance) Weaknesses include overall depth and we lack hurdling, jumpers and mid-distance runners as our season begins. However, we look to be a team that improves as the season progresses and our sophomores and freshman mature, Horstman said. He is going to have to depend on veteran participants (but not letterwinners) in senior Alex Ketcham (2 years; throws), senior Seth Ricker (sprints), senior Craig Stewart (sprints), junior Chad Wurst (sprints) and sophomore Isaac Fischbach (sprints), along with newcomers Quinton Neidert (freshman; sprints) and classmate Dylan Wiechart (distance). The girls roster also has 15 members, including five veterans led by fourth-year senior Emily Grone (hurdles) a member of the State-placing relays from a year ago and fourth-year senior Alyssa Schimmoeller (distance). Also back from last springs 38-13 dual/ invitational team (2nd in PCL, 4th at Districts, 12th at Regionals; 36th at State) are third-year junior Alyssa Wiedeman (sprints), senior Kaylynn Noriega (sprints) and junior Keri Eickholt (mid-distance). Notable losses include five four-year letterwinners: Lori Bruskotter, Elaina Maag, Marissa Mesker, Kaitlin Stechschulte and Macy Schroeder, part of the State-placing relays from last spring. Also gone are 3-year letterwinner Mara Brown, Reanna Higginbotham, Kristen Maag, Jenna Von Sossan and Katie Schnipke.

Montenery seeks to move above .500 at Spencerville baseball

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] SPENCERVILLE Troy Montenery is entering his fourth season at the helm of the Spencerville baseball program (9th as a head coach overall) and has an overall mark of 95-86 (30-38 at the Division IV Bearcats, the rest at Jefferson). He returns five starters and three other lettermen from last springs 6-14 edition (3-6 in the Northwest Conference - tied for 7th place) that lost to Lincolnview in the sectionals. Back for another go-round in the starting lineup are fourth-year senior Jonathan Shimp (infielder/pitcher; .254 batting average, 1-2 with 5.25 ERA), third-year senior James Schaad (outfielder/pitcher; .196 BA, 1-2 with 2.44 ERA), sophomore Wyatt Krouskop (outfielder/pitcher; .167 BA, 1-0 with 3.23 ERA), sophomore Hunter French (catcher; .172 BA) and classmate David Wisher (shortstop). Other returning letterwinners are senior Jon Long (third base; .273), senior Aaron Crider (pitcher/outfielder/designated hitter; .194) and sophomore Mitchell Youngpeter (outfielder/pitcher). Five other lettermen graduated last spring: Joel Shimp (.310, 15 runs, 2-5 with 2.78 ERA, NWC Honorable Mention), Sean Monfort (.350, 12 RBI, NWC Honorable Mention), Tanner Koverman (.136, 1-4 with 7.00 ERA), Danny Settlemire and Dusty Settlemire. Promising newcomers to replace that quintet include freshman Jacob Meyer (pitcher/infielder/outfielder), freshman Thad Ringwald (pitcher/first base/ outfielder) and classmate Nick Freewalt (pitcher/infielder). One of the things we do well is having a willingness to work hard with good effort. We also have good pitching depth, with 12 of our 22 players bringing back mound experience: Jonathan, James, Aaron, Wyatt, Mitchell, Jacob and Thad comprise the varsity pitching staff, Montenery noted. What does hurt us is not having a better number of players; not having

a junior varsity team the last three years hurt player development. We have enough players for a JV team this year and will hopefully reap the benefits of more players getting game experience. With those 22 players, though, one weakness is inexperience; 17 of our players are freshmen and sophomores. Our team batting average tumbled to .213 last season and if we are hoping to get better as a team, we must hit better. One of our goals this year is to establish program consistency in grades 7-12, resulting in a solid varsity team on a yearly basis. A lot hinges on how quickly the freshmen and sophomores get up to varsity speed. We have good senior leadership and they will be counted on to show them the way. If the underclassman play up to their potential and our overall team hitting improves, we could be a fun team to watch in 2014! In our league, Crestview is the top team.

The remainder of the varsity roster has junior Red Wood (outfielder), sophomore Damien Corso (outfielder), sophomore Hunter French (catcher) and sophomore Wyatt Krouskop (pitcher/outfielder). The JV team is comprised of Freewalt, Corso, freshman Brady Becker (pitcher/infielder), freshman Damon Blair (infielder), freshman Luke Carpenter (pitcher/infielder), freshman Peyton Ford (catcher), freshman Austin Gallimore (outfielder), freshman Gage Goecke (infielder), freshman Keaton Lotz (pitcher/outfielder), classmate Justin Thiery (outfielder) and classmate Connor Vogt (pitcher/outfielder). The varsity assistant coach is Jim Fisher, the JV head coach Shane Falke and the JV assistant coach (volunteer) is Jeff Thiery. Spencerville hosts Marion Local for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29, to commence the new campaign.

McConnell keeps on going for Spencerville track and field

SPENCERVILLE Bruce McConnell keeps on producing State-quality track and field athletes for the Spencerville boys and girls track programs. In 2014, the Lady Bearcats are led by a pair of Division III State placers: third-year junior Kacie Mulholland (400-meter dash; 5th; school record-holder; sprints) and third-year junior Schylar Miller (pole vault, 8th; 2012 State champion in 4x400-meter relay; vault/hurdles/ long jump). Several others have had experience at the State level in earlier track and field seasons or in cross country, such as fourth-year senior Kari Purdy (middle distance), a 2012 State champion in the 4x4 relay, 2013 State cross country qualifier and a 2013 Regional qualifier in both the 800-meter run and 4x4 relay; fourth-year senior Tori Hardesty (distance), 2012 State CC qualifier; fourth-year senior Caitlin Wurst (middle distance), 2011 State qualifier in 4x8 relay; fourth-year senior Jenna Kahle (hurdles), 2011 State qualifier in the 4x4; and third-year junior Cierra Adams (distance), 2012 State CC qualifier. Three others qualified for the Regionals a year ago: third-year senior Beth Griffin (throws), discus; junior Katie Merriman (throws/sprints), shot put; and lone sophomore Kennedy Sharp (middle distance), 400 meters and 4x4. McConnell will be looking to four more who lettered at one time in the spring or are coming off injuries: fourth-year senior Patricia Riley (pole vault), injured last year; secondyear junior Audrey Bowsher (throws), missed last year; second-year junior Shania Johnson (throws), missed last year; and second-year junior Emily Meyer (prints), injured in 2013. Newcomers include senior Brandi Shelhart (throws), freshman Allison Adams (throws), freshman Christina Emery (hurdles), classmate Carliegh Hefner (middle distance) and classmate Amelia Wood (hurdles). With only one senior departing due to graduation, Northwest Conference shot put champion Abby Freewalt, McConnell figures 2014

will see continued excellence from the Lady Bearcats. A third of our team has competed at the State meet, so it should be an exciting year, he began. We must find the winning attitude again as we go for our fifth straight NWC title. On the boys side, he has a returning State qualifier fourth-year senior Anthony Schuh in the 110-meter high hurdles to build the boys team around. Four others veterans were Regional qualifiers and will add their veteran presence: fourth-year senior Colton Miller (jumps/ sprints), who qualified in the pole vault in 2012; third-year junior Trevor McMichael (middle distance/jumps), the high jump (NWC champ); third-year junior Logan Vandemark (throws/sprints), shot put; and sophomore Zach Goecke (sprints/jumps). Three other veterans return for the veteran mentor: senior Matthew Hurles (distance), junior Grant Goecke (middle distance) and sophomore Evan Pugh (throws). Newcomers to the varsity level are senior Tyler Reynolds (first year; throws), junior Andrew Emery (first year; sprints), junior Byron Gay (first year; distance), junior Riley Klaus (first year; distance), sophomore Mason Nourse (middle distance), freshman Bailey Croft (high jump/hurdles), freshman Griffen Croft (discus/middle distance), freshman Chandler Kahle (pole vault), freshman Brandon Patterson (hurdles), freshman Dylan Shelhart (throws), freshman Ed Smith (distance) and freshman Alvin Wilson (pole vault/ sprints). Graduates include State-qualifying discus thrower Lucas Shumate (fifth), as well as Derek Goecke (4 years; sprints), Keith Lenhart (4 years; distance), Joe Wisher (3 years; distance), Cody Fast (hurdles), Lucas Krouskop (throws) and Bryce Ringwald (throws). We have an excellent nucleus of throwers, hurdlers and jumpers. We must stay healthy, keep working hard and, as always, the younger athletes must step up by the end of the season, McConnell added. NWC favorites are Columbus Grove, Crestview and Bluffton on the boys side and Columbus Grove on the girls. Assistant coaches include Brian McMichael, Rick Orr and Tim Wilson. Spencerville begins the newest season at the Lady Tiger Classique (girls) at Versailles on Saturday, March 29, and the boys side at home versus Celina and Liberty-Benton on Tuesday, April 1.

Lady Bearcat softballers ready for strong 2014

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] SPENCERVILLE Jeff Johnston finished his inaugural season at the helm of the Spencerville fast-pitch softball team at 6-15 (4-5 in the Northwest Confcerence). He has a mixed bag for 2014 as he lost seven letterwinners from that team but returns nine this season. He has yet to figure out a starting lineup but due to experience and versatility, he can take his time. Amongst the veterans back are first-team all-NWC pick senior pitcher Tori Johnston (also third base; fourth year; .544 batting average, 9 doubles, 20 runs, 26 runs batted in), secondteam all-NWC senior catcher Haleigh Mull (center field; fourth year; .465 BA, 11 RBIs, 10 runs) both second-year captains third-year junior Mackenzie Ringwald (honorable mention; third base/center field; .429 BA, 8 2Bs, 15 RBIs, 10 runs), third-year junior Maddy Hollar (shortstop; .308 BA) both first-year captains third-year junior Amanda Crider (first base/ third base), junior Amber Hallard (right field, .310 BA), sophomore Alex Shumate (honorable mention; pitcher; .388 BA4 2Bs, 16 runs, 10 RBIs), sophomore Caitlyn Probst (left field/first base) and classmate Jalyn Pickelsimer. We do have those nine letterwinners, seven of whom either started or played a considerable amount of time at the varsity level. Tori returns as our ace and will play third some, too, while Haleigh anchors the catcher position; they bring a lot of leadership and two very good bats to the lineup, Coach Johnston explained. Mackenzie will be the leader in center field and Maddy is a very solid middle infielder. Amanda is coming off a major knee injury in 2013 but looks solid at either corner infield spot. Amber returns in right field and has looked very good so far. We expect big things on the mound for Alex and she will split with Tori at third. Caitlyn gives us great power and Jalyn great speed. Newcomers include senior Elisha Satter-

field, senior Ashley King, junior Megan Miller (left field), sophomore Adriana Hempker, sophomore Sarah Barnes, classmate Makayla Kinner, freshman Alix Hambrick (second base), freshman Tiffany Work (right field), freshman Destiny Price, freshman Sam Sutherly, freshman Madison Kline, freshman Melanie Monroe and classmate Aubrey Koverman. Megan ran track the last two springs, so she is back on the diamond as a welcome addition. There are a handful of freshmen that have caught the coaching staffs eye and I expect will make contributions this spring: Alix, Sam, Tiffany, Destiny and Maddy (Kline), the coach continued. Our four NWC honorees combined for 120 hits, 62 RBIs and 56 runs scored; I expect even more from that core this year. We have really emphasized offensive production this off-season; with the addition of a healthy Amanda and Caitlyn, we have the potential to be a powerful offensive team. We need to play more fundamentallysound defense; we have gotten faster and stronger this off-season but we need to get smarter and more sure of ourselves on the diamond. We need to limit teams to only three outs per inning and help our pitchers on defense. Gone are 3-year starting shortstop (4-year letterwinner) Alyssa Mulholland, first baseman Shelby Mulholland (3 years), left fielder/pitcher Hanna Keller (3 years), second baseman Alli Gilroy (3 years), outfielder/first baseman Abby Lee (2 years) and Haleigh Calvelage (1 year). Every good team sets one of its goals as winning the NWC; we have continued to get better the last couple of years and are ready to take that leap. After going 4-5 last year and no loss by more that three runs, we feel we are ready to compete with the best teams in the conference, he added. If we stay healthy and keep improving each game, I think this could be one of the better teams weve had here in recent history; we have some key players back in their third and fourth varsity seasons and have added a few new players and talented freshmen

Lancers Longstreth brings back 10 to sophomore season

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] RURAL MIDDLE POINT Kevin Longstreth started his head varsity baseball coaching career in 2013. In 2014, he has 10 lettermen back in hopes of improving his 9-13 mark a year ago, including 3-6 in the Northwest Conference. Two of them are all-conference picks: senior outfielder/pitcher Kyle Williams (second-teamer; .315 batting average; 4 doubles, 12 runs scored, 9 stolen bases, 17 runs batted in; 0-5, 6.50 earned run average) and 6-3 classmate Eli Farmer (pitcher/outfielder; honorable mention; 4-3, 1.82 ERA, 23 Ks), both of them in their third seasons of varsity. Three more are also in their third seasons of varsity: senior Conner McCleery (6-3 first baseman; .302 BA, 6 walks), senior Troy Patterson (second base) and senior Derek Friesner (outfielder). The other five are entering their second varsity seasons: junior Dalton Schmersal (third base/outfielder; .222 BA), sophomore Austin Leeth (third base/shortstop; 1-2, 5.25 ERA), sophomore Derek Youtsey (6-3 third base/outfielder; 1-2, 6.27 ERA), sophomore Tyler Richey (catcher)

players that we are going to be in close games, Longstreth explained. We will have to play fundamentally sound, both on defense and offense, and do all of the small things that make teams good. We are most likely not going to have enough power numbers to be competitive in highscoring games. We expect to play close games where we have to keep errors to a minimum and push all the runs across the plate as possible. Our goal this year is to compete for a NWC title along with a sectional title. Sophomore Cole Schmersal (second base/outfield) is a promising newcomer to help offset key graduates in Nick Leeth (.315 BA, 24 runs, 20 SBs) and Matt Oechsle (.273 BA), along with Trevor Neate, Austin Kayser and James Steele. The remainder of the varsity roster/the junior varsity unit has junior Dalton Hines (6-2 pitcher), Jacob Pollock (6-3 junior

first baseman), junior Wyatt Schmersal (catcher/outfielder), sophomore Dustin Hale (third base), sophomore Keli Ralston (pitcher), freshman Nick Motycka (first base), freshman catcher Dylan Lee and classmate Jayden Dickson (third base). It is important to continue to stay consistent with what we have been working on in my second year of coaching, Longstreth added. The players are well aware of what we expect from them and they know what to expect from our coaching staff. We hope to be competing for an NWC title, as is the same as every year. Crestview and Columbus Grove are the teams to beat. Assisting in the coaching duties are Chris Youtsey and Jeremy Ebel. Lincolnview is scheduled to head to Fort Recovery for the 2014 season-opener on Tuesday, April 1.

RURAL MIDDLE POINT Kent McClure has a 3-year mark of 34-27 for the Lincolnview fast-pitch softball crew, including a strong 18-5 team last spring that ended up as District runner-ups and co-champions in the Northwest Conference. He expects even better results with seven returning starters back from a year ago and three other letterwinners. Back for another go-round in the starting lineup are fourth-year senior pitcher Ashley McClure (first-team All-NWC last spring), fourth-year senior starting third baseman Kelsey Mohr, fourth-year senior starting first baseman Macey Ashbaugh, third-year junior leftfielder Devann Springer (District 8 honorable mention; NWC second team), third-year junior Julia Thatcher outfielder/catcher (District 8 second team; NWC honorable mention), junior Baylee Neate (third-year starting shortstop) and sophomore centerfielder Autumn Proctor. Also back are letterwinning sophomore second sacker Mikenna Klinger, sophomore third sacker Hanna Taylor and junior pitcher Brittney Foust (out with an ACL injury). McClure has to compensate for the loss of the graduated Jodie Doner (center field), 4-year catcher Lauren Calvert, second sacker Kaitlyn Brant and pitcher Courtney Gorman. The coach has a boatload of promising newcomers in junior Stephanie Longwell (outfielder), junior Brittney Pessfall (outfielder), freshman Zoe Miller (infielder), freshman Macala Ashbaugh (pitcher), freshman Makenzie Kraft (infielder), freshman Grace Richey (outfielder), freshman Allison Berryman (outfielder), freshman Kayla Schroeder (outfielder), freshman McKenzie Davis (outfielder) and currently-injured (ACL) classmate Katie McClure (infielder/outfielder). Coming into the season, our strengths are pitching, experience and the infield. Our weaknesses are injuries and losses due to graduation, Coach McClure added. Our goals are to win the NWC and to make a long trip down the tourney trail and see how far we can go. The NWC is such that every team is one you have to worry about because its improved so much. Lincolnview is set to begin 2014 at Perry on Saturday, March 29.

State-placing Tow, Bilimek lead Lancer track and field into 2014
the State team that should give us a lot of points and depth in the middle distance and distance events and relays, Langdon said. We have a large group of sprinters and some upperclassmen that should consistently score points for us. We have a regional-qualifying 110 hurdler back as a sophomore that should find a great deal of success. We have several new boys that should score points for us this year. The boys have the opportunity to have a successful season but there are a few field events that we need to find points in and that will make the difference on how successful we are as a team. The other two members of that State 4x8 relay used up their eligibility last spring: Jeff Jacomet (Regional finalist in 1,600-meter run; middle distance, distance and relays) and Kade Carey (400 meters, middle distance, relays and high jump). Also gone from the boys crew due to graduation last spring are Austin Treesh (long jump), Brooks Ludwig (400 meters, sprints and relays), Evan Williams (Regional qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles; hurdles, sprints and relays) and Corey Brown (shot put and discus). On the Lady Lancers side, the lone placer at Regionals that returns is junior Hannah McCleery (9th at Regional high jump). Langdon must replace a quartet of Regional placers that exhausted their eligibility a year ago: Kaylee Thatcher (8th in Regional finals in 100 hurdles and 8th at Regional 4x100-meter relay), Haley McAbee (4x100-meter relay; sprints, relays and long jump), Taylor Miller (4x100; sprints and relays) and Sarah Harris (4x1; sprints and relays). Also gone via the graduation route are Crystal Protsman (shot put and discus) and Brittany ODaffer (shot put and discus). He will look to veterans to help pick up the slack: senior Christine Stemen (middle distance and relays), senior Maranda Bigham, classmate Sarah Riley, senior Haylee Laman and senior Katie Marbaugh. Other experienced hands include junior Danielle Dasher (shot put and discus), sophomore Anna Gorman (middle distance, distance and relays), sophomore Grace Gorman (hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays), sophomore Ashton Bowersock (middle distance and relays), sophomore Alyssa Matthews (shot put and discus), sophomore Samantha Bigham (long jump), sophomore Michaela Campbell, sophomore Elizabeth Lammers and

RURAL MIDDLE POINT Matt Langdon has tried to build his Lincolnview boys and girls track and field units into a consistent power over the years. Based on State-experienced performers returning from a year ago, the Lancer boys are primed for continued success in 2014. He will build that crew around a pair of returning Division III State-experienced veterans: junior Bayley Tow (distance and relays), who was part of the Division III State 4x800-meter relay that just missed the podium in ninth place and who also finished 12th in the 1,600-meter run at Columbus, as well as State Indoor runner-up in the 1,600 this winter and part of the Lancer State-qualifying cross country team that finished 12th; and senior Ben Bilimek (4x8; middle distance and relays; State CC). Also returning for another go-round for the boys are the likes of senior Doug Hicks (hurdles, sprints and relays), senior Travis Lippi (distance; State CC), senior Dalton West, senior Austin Sealscott, senior Dalton Kayser (sprints, relays and long jump), senior Zach Keith and classmate Michael Garay. More veterans come from junior Logan Jewell (sprints and relays), junior Damon Norton (sprints and long jump), junior Troy Thompson (middle distance), junior Scott Cowling, junior Tyler Brant, junior Nathan Byrne, junior Austin Beard, junior Nathan Diller, junior Micah Germann and classmate Alex Rodriguez (pole vault; State CC), as well as sophomore Hunter Blankenmeyer (Regional qualifier in the 110-meter intermediate hurdles; hurdles and high jump), sophomore Parker Sealscott, sophomore Braxton Matthews, sophomore Trevor Neate (State CC), sophomore Louie Crow and sophomore Colton Snyder. Newcomers include freshmen Tracey West (State CC), Brayden Farmer, Jacob Bradford, Andrew Fickert, Dylan Verhoff, Casey Garay, Austin Elick, Logan Steele and Taylor Strickland. We should have good depth in a lot of events; we have a large number of boys out for the team this year and that helps fill events and relays. We have the cross country boys from

sophomore Sami Klausing. Freshmen newcomers include Katlyn Wendel, Ryanne Ducheney, Abbie Enyart, Brooke Thatcher, Claira Rhoades and Gracie Lammers. The girls team has some strong individual talent from the cross country season, as well as a regional qualifying high jumper returning that should score points at invites for us, Langdon added. The girls will struggle with depth this year; we lost a very hard-working and talented group of seniors last year. We are in the rebuilding process and it will take some time to get where we want to be as a team. On both sides, we need to consistently work hard. Every day of practice is valuable and we need to stay focused on our goals as we move through the season. We want to have fun but at the same time, work harder than any team around. Our goal is to compete with pride and respect at all times and advance as many athletes in tournament as possible. Assisting Langdon at the high school level are Ben Cowan and Curtis Miller. In the junior high ranks are Alison Hammons and Sandy Dowdy. Lincolnview commences the latest track season in a tri-meet at Crestview on Tuesday, April 8.

COLUMBUS GROVE BULLDOGS King has huge holes to fill for 2014 Grove BB
By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] COLUMBUS GROVE Cory King has built up a solid baseball program at Columbus Grove in his 11 seasons at the helm, including last springs 20-5 mark that ended at the hands of Kalida in the Division IV sectionals. That included a championship in the Putnam County League (6-1) and a runner-up finish in the Northwest Conference (7-2). However, for him to add another season like last to his 144-136 mark, he has major holes to fill in 2014. Amongst the losses were NWC/PCL Player of the Year and honorable-mention All-Stater Matt Jay (4 years; catcher/pitcher/first base) and NWC/PCL First-Teamer and honorable-mention All-Stater Trey Roney (3 years; third base/first base/pitcher). In addition, first-teamer Brandon Benroth (3 years; second base/catcher/third base) and second-teamers Blake Hoffman (3 years; outfielder/shortstop/pitcher) and Brady Shafer (3 years; outfielder/pitcher), as well as Kody Griffith (2 years; first base), Brent Vorst (2 years; infielder), Clay Diller (2 years; second base) and Eric Otto, all exhausted their eligibility last spring. With all those losses (taking 23 varsity letters with them), King figures to struggle offensively this spring. What we need to work on is scoring runs, without question. We lost our top seven hitters statistically due to graduation; therefore, finding runs and run-producers will be a necessity, he said. All is not lost for King, however; four letterwinners are back to build the new Bulldogs around: third-year senior Riley Brubaker (catcher/pitcher/outfielder), thirdyear senior Joshua Verhoff (pitcher/third base), junior Elisha Jones (pitcher/catcher/ infielder) and currently-injured senior Mason Smith (first base/outfielder/utility). The 2014 season will look to rely on strong pitching from returning pitchers in Josh, Riley and Elisha, of which had a combined record of 12-2 and 90 combined innings in 2013, he continued. Promising newcomers that King will rely on to pick up the slack for the lost players especially on the mound and on offense are senior Zach Brinkman (outfielder), junior Tanner Neu (outfielder/pitcher), junior Zach Shafer (third base), sophomore Logan Diller (first base/pitcher), sophomore Marcos Olivo (shortstop), sophomore Ryan Verhoff (pitcher/infield) and freshman Reid Stechschulte (outfield/shortstop/pitcher). We look to rebuild after losing nine seniors to graduation last year, King added. This years team will need to win with pitching and defense until we find the right lineup combination to produce runs. With a strong pitching rotation, we are hopeful to be in the hunt for both the PCL and the NWC titles. The rest of the roster has senior Brett Sampson (outfield), senior Will Selhorst (outfield), junior Travis Ellerbrock (first base), sophomore Garrett Hauenstein (catcher), sophomore T.J. Pardo, (outfield), sophomore Jake Utendorf (second base), classmate Eli Wiswasser (outfield), freshman Adam Birkemeier (catcher), freshman Ethan Blankemeyer (pitcher), freshman Emilio Delarosa (outfield), freshman Gage Gerdeman (outfield), freshman Logan Hardeman (outfield), freshman Matt McKee (shortstop), freshman Erin Newland (first base), freshman Jacob Otto (outfield), freshman

Gallmeier new Grove softball coach

Grove softball 2014
Members of the Columbus Grove softball team (front row, from left) are Micah Stechschulte, Brianna Glass, Mackenzie Wurth, Marybeth Nemire and Hope Schroeder. In the second row are Monica Delgado, Brooke Hoffman, Katie Roose, McKenzie Bame and Jennifer Ellerbrock. (Delphos Herald/ Charlie Warnimont)

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected]

COLUMBUS GROVE Travis Gallmeier was an assistant coach for then-head coach Brian Schroeder during last years 18-7 edition of the Lady Bulldogs. They ended up 5-1 in the Putnam County League and 6-3 in the Northwest Conference, good for second place in both. Gallmeier will slide over to the head coaching spot, taking the place of Schroeder (49-28 in 3 seasons) for the Division III crew. He returns nine letterwinners from last season to help make the transition easier.

We return a lot of experience from last years team. We look to be competitive in both the PCL and NWC this year after finishing runner-up in both last year.
Travis Gallmeier, head coach girls softball
Amongst them are seven starters: fourth-year varsity player Micah Stechschulte (left field), fourth-year senior Deanna Kleman (center field), fourthyear player Katie Roose (catcher), thirdyear senior Kara Birkemeier (first base), third-year junior Hope Schroeder (third base/pitcher), third-year junior Brianna Glass (second base) and sophomore Kyrah Yinger (shortstop). The other two veterans are junior Monica Delgado (DH/third base) and sophomore Brooke Hoffman (pinch runner).

We return a lot of experience from last years team. We look to be competitive in both the PCL and NWC this year after finishing runner-up in both last year, Gallmeier noted. Gallmeier only has to replace two starters but one of them is ace righty Bobbi Heckel (3 years) and the second is 4-year player Haley Grigsby (outfield). Looking to step into the lineup or provide punch off the bench are sophomore Mackenzie Wurth, sophomore Marybeth Nemire, sophomore Mackenzie Bame, sophomore Sammi Rosengarten, freshman Grace Schroeder and freshman Jenny Ellerbrock. Grove commences the Gallmeier tenure on Thursday, April 3, at McComb.

Grove boys tracksters face rebuilding 2014

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] COLUMBUS GROVE Columbus Grove boys track and field coach Chris Grothaus is used to having State champions and qualifiers in his eight years at the helm. He had his share last year when Collin Grothaus took the Division III title in the pole vault; Dakota Vogt finished runner-up in the discus; Jake Graham was fourth in the 3,200 meter run; and Derek Rieman (300-meter hurdles) and Trevor Schroeder (shot put) ended up eighth. Grothaus also qualified in the 300 hurdles, Rieman in the 110-meter hurdles and Graham and Alex Shafer in the 4x800-meter relay. The bad news is that all six of those guys graduated last spring, as well as three other lettermen, as Grothaus prepares his crew for 2014. Also gone from last springs team that placed eighth at State and won the Regionals, District, Sectionals, Northwest Conference and Putnam County League titles are Jacob Roebke (throws), Troy Meyer (distance) and Nick Schmiesing (sprints). As well, others expected to return did not for 2014. He has two veterans returning that were part of that 4x8 relay team: third-year junior Colton Grothaus (relays/distance) and sophomore Alex Giesege (middle distance/relays). Also returning are Alec Gladwell (thirdyear senior; sprints), Joey Warnecke (third-year junior; pole vault/sprints), junior Hunter Halker (hurdles/jumps), sophomore David Bogart (intermediate runs), sophomore Baily Clement (high jump/sprints) and classmate Phillip Vance (distance). Promising newcomers include junior Aaron Bremer (throws), junior Jerry Kesselmeyer (distance), sophomore Gabe Stechschulte (jumps), sophomore Austin Price (sprints), freshman Rece Roney (throws), freshman Caiden Grothaus (pole vault) and classmate Lachlan Clymer (sprints/hurdles). We should have decent distance runners with Colton, Alex and Bryce Sharrits. We See GROVE BOYS, page 33

Grove girls tracksters locked and loaded for 2014

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] COLUMBUS GROVE Columbus Grove girls track and field coach Tim Staley had an experienced unit a year ago with 17 returning letterwinners that eventually won a Putnam County League title and was a runner-up in the Northwest Conference. This year, he has an embarrassment of veteran riches with 20 returnees, led by a quartet of Division III State qualifiers: third-year senior Julia Wynn (sprints and relays), eighth at State in the 4x100-meter relay; third-year junior Sydney McCluer (hurdles and relays), eighth in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400 relay; sophomore Raiya Flores (sprints) 400 relay; and third-year senior qualifier Megan Verhoff (throws) in the discus. As well, third-year junior Annie Schramm (throws) was a Regional qualifier in the shot put. Also back are third-year senior Aubrey Fruchey (throws), third-year senior Stacy Hovest (distance), third-year senior Meghan Schroeder (long jump, sprints), third-year senior Sydni Smith (hurdles, middle distance), third-year junior Becca Endicott (throws), third-year junior Megan Langhals (distance, pole vault), third-year junior Alexis Ricker (distance, high jump), third-year junior Danielle Schramm (throws), third-year junior Sarah Schroeder (sprints, relays), third-year junior Kristin Wynn (sprints), sophomore Mackenzie Clymer (hurdles, long jump), sophomore Lynea Diller (throws), sophomore Morgan Messer (distance), sophomore Mady Vorhees (middle distance), sophomore Robyn

In the third row are Phillip Vance, Dylan Blankemeyer, Ryan Price, Austin Price, Tyler Radabaugh, Tyler Brooks, Aiden Fortman and Kyle Shafer. In the fourth row are David Martin, Brandt Follas, Justin Calvelage, Seth Daniel, Boone Brubaker, Grant Cassidy, Eric Warnecke, Brandon Grigsby and Ryan Tabler. Schumacher (throws) and classmate Linnea Stephens (sprints). A newcomer to Columbus Grove but not to State competition (Division II) is Brookville senior transfer Tori Follas (throws), who qualified in the shot put last spring. Other newcomers include sophomore Savannah Delgado (throws), sophomore Becca Meyer (throws), sophomore Abby Smith (throws), sophomore Jasmine Thomas (throws) and a boatload of freshmen: Julia Bogart (distance), Danielle Caudill (throws), Candace Downing (high jump), Briley Keysor (sprints), Miranda Lambert (sprints), Kirsten Malsam (middle distance), Hallie Malsam (sprints), Elizabeth Martin (throws), Macy McCluer (distance), Leah Meyerholtz (distance), Chassidy Oatman (throws), Haley Roe (hurdles), Lauren Roose (pole vault), Kara Sanderson (throws), Gracyn Stechschulte (distance) and Kiara Williams (sprints). With the good numbers we have, depth should not be a problem. Our strengths will be the throws, hurdles and sprint relays, Staley observed. The competition in the throws will be very tight. We are looking to improve our distance times and develop jumpers. We look for our seniors and State qualifiers to show leadership in practice. Our sophomores and freshmen are big classes with a lot of talent. A key loss to graduation is Jessi Smith, the fourth member of that 400 relay, Melissa Amstutz (distance), Cassie Stechschulte (jumps), Sienna Gerdeman (distance), Quincy Miller (distance), Taylor Windau (throws) and Lindsay Wurth (sprints) also graduated. We hope to contend for the NWC and PCL titles, Staley added. Spencerville will

Grapner brings back 8 for 3rd Elida baseball campaign

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] ELIDA Elidas baseballers ended up 5-21 a year ago under second-year head man Todd Grapner. The third-year coach brings back four starters and four other veterans. He hopes that with all that experience to build around in 2014 and with several promising newcomers added to the mix, he can better his 2-year mark of 14-37. Back for another go-round in the starting lineup are the likes of senior Max Stambaugh (infielder/pitcher), senior Riley Overholt (infielder), third-year junior Adam Purdy (outfielder/pitcher) and junior Travis Watkins (catcher/pitcher). Also returning from off the bench a year ago or part-time starters and likely new full-time starters are senior Alan

However, we have inexperience at key positions, especially at shortstop and center field. As well, we dont have a lot of power. We return four starters and have added depth to our pitching staff. Pitching and the ability to make plays defensively will be vital to our success this season. We feel that we have a chance to be competitive as our younger guys gain experience. As always, the Western Buckeye League will be extremely competitive. We will have to play our best night in and night out to finish in the top half of the league. Look for Defiance, Bath and Wapak to finish at the top of the league. Elida is slated to open 2014 on Tuesday, March 31, at Fort Jennings.

ELIDA Elidas fast-pitch softballers finished 12-11 last spring in head coach Mike Eilermans fourth season at the helm. Elida track has overall experienced crews for 2014

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] ELIDA Elida boys track and field coach F. Kevin Bowers had 38 total boys out for last springs unit, including a 4-4400-meter relay quartet of Brandon Stinson, Clark Etzler, Nick Pauff and Quinton Poling that finished eighth at the Division II State Track and Field Meet in 3:21.04. He wont have quite as many in 2014, with 32 performers, and only junior Etzler is back from that State relay. However, there are 14 more lettermen back, so Bowers has a mix of experience and fresh faces. Back for another go-round are veterans in senior Avery Sumpter, senior Jarrod Wehinger, junior Desmend White, junior William Legge, junior Austin Lopez, junior Glenn McVey, junior Jared Ramon, junior Corbin Stratton, sophomore Gaerid Littler, sophomore Eric Anthony, sophomore Noah Dry, sophomore Canyon Hurt, sophomore Tyler Kanitz and sophomore Collin Poling. Newcomers include senior exchange student Simen Domaas, sophomore Jordan Rothermel, sophomore Marcus Whitt, freshman Trevor Brookman, freshman Daulton Buetner, freshman Tyler Carter, freshman KeJuan Frazier, freshman Kennedy Gray, freshman John Heffner, freshman Mathew Hesseling, freshman Malik Morris, freshman Caleb Newland, freshman DeAveion Payne, freshman Ben Phipps, freshman Sam Quaintance, freshman Austin Selvaggio and classmate DeAngelo Woods. Our focus this season is New Season, New TEAM - TEAMWORK Makes DREAMS Work! We do possess some experience but we are young, which is PRICELESS! Bowers explained. We must develop leaders: some people are born leaders but they also had to develop it from the very beginning. Its only the beginning. Last year is last year...I look forward to THIS year! It will be tough to compete in the Western Buckeye League but we cannot control what others do; we can control what we do. Im looking forward to the days ahead. Besides the previously-mentioned Stinson (sprints), Pauff (sprints, relays and pole vault) and Poling (sprints and throws), also gone due to graduated are the likes of Deshea Hughes (sprints), Mitch Knotts (pole vault), Austine Onwuegbushu (sprints and relays), Anthony Sumpter (sprints/relays), Kevin Russell (hurdles), Drew Freels, Justin Ramon and Dameer Relford. Elida girls coach Melissa Schultz had a very inexperienced crew last spring, her first at the helm after four years as a middle school coach, after taking over for Michelle Cahill. This springs crew of Lady Dawgs is just as inexperienced overall with only a quartet of veterans: junior Aubrey Williams (4x100-meter relay, 100-meter dash and high jump), sophomore Tori Bowen (relays and pole vault), sophomore Jalisha Henry (400-meter dash and relays) and sophomore Alyssa Turrentine (4x800-meter relay and 3.200-meter run). She brings back several others that were in the program a year ago but did not letter: senior Hailey Hurst, senior Kaiti Hinegardner, junior Whitney Moneer, junior Courtney Honcell, sophomore XZation Woods, sophomore Megan Tracy (a promising newcomer; relays, sprints and long jump), sophomore Savana Sligh, sophomore Hannah Malone, sophomore Bailee Kuhn and sophomore Keely Kipp (another promising newcomer; relays and sprints). She must replace Rachel Foust (throws), Erin Kesler (long jump, sprints and relays), Adrienne Harmon and Khiarea Deshazer, who all graduated, plus several veterans returning who chose not to go out this spring. Amongst the most promising newcomers are freshman Paige Lofton (relays, sprints and hurdles) and classmate Lauren Bull (distance), along with Emily Campbell, Shanelle Johnson, Tatiyana Hines, Mallory Etzler, Aerianna Littler, Kaylee Mekolites, Jenna Foust, Natalie Carder, Shabria Simpson and Hannah Fleishans. One thing we do is work well together as a team. We lack upperclassmen to show leadership but the underclassmen have stepped up in that area, Schultz added. Without the upperclassmen, we have to get used to the higher demands of a varsity sport rather quickly. Our season will depend on our promising newcomers to help fill the void left by losing some of our key upperclassmen. Assisting Schultz are Al Clum and Gary Evans. Elidas track and field season begins Tuesday, April 1, in a tri-meet at Ottawa-Glandorf.

We return those nine lettermen, seven who started, including two pitchers Michaela and Caitie who have experience pitching at the varsity level. We will have a pretty good hitting team lead by Sabrina, Caitie and Michaela, Eilerman added. We will be led defensively by Erika, Jenna and Taylor. We do have to

replace two graduated seniors. I think if we can continue to improve defensively and stay healthy, that we will be able to compete in the always very tough WBL. Teams to look out for would be Bath, Celina, Wapakoneta and Shawnee. The final varsity member is freshman Kyleigh Gay (infielder/outfielder). Recker takes over for long-time Kalida coach McBride

By JIM METCALFE Staff Writer [email protected] KALIDA The Kalida baseball program has been in the capable hands of longtime mentor Jim McBride for a long time. The torch has been passed. Joe Recker a Kalida graduate has taken over the reins for the highly-successful McBride and will have some familiar faces and holes to fill from last springs 7-16 edition, including a 2-5 record in the Putnam County League. Recker brings backs eight veterans for his Division IV unit, all for their second seasons: senior Randy Zeller (pitcher/first base/third base), senior Andrew Krouse (outfielder), senior outfielder Dylan Hoffman, junior pitcher/third baseman Colton Farrell, junior catcher Brent Hovest, sophomore southpaw Austin Swift (pitcher/ outfielder/first base), sophomore Brady Laudick (pitcher/outfielder/first base) and classmate Trent Gerding (pitcher/infielder). He lost a total of six lettermen (with 8 letters), the most experienced being 3-year catcher Neil Recker, along with rightfielder Adam Knueve, first baseman Rob Kleman, outfielder Kyle Vorst, rightfielder Austin Horstman and pitcher Kyle Landin. Promising newcomers are junior Derrick Schimmoeller (outfielder), junior Blaine Warnimont (infielder/outfielder, sophomore Brandon Erhart (infielder), sophomore Drew Hovest (infielder/outfielder/pitcher), sophomore Austin Klausing (infielder/pitcher), sophomore Trevor Maag (outfielder), sophomore Nathan Myers (catcher/infielder/ pitcher) and sophomore Alex von der Embse (outfielder/infielder). CRESTVIEW KNIGHTS Crestview roundup

featured impressive stats in all areas -- team batting average of .310, ERA 1.37 and fielding percentage .944. Proving that the drive to the Final Four was no fluke, the Knights summer ACME team also advanced to the state tournament. Coach Jim Wharton is dealing with a new situation in 2014; six of his players (Helm, Etzler, Simerman, Rolsten, Owens and Rickard) are on the basketball team and, therefore, are starting baseball practice approximately a month after the start date allowable by the OHSAA -- and only about a week before the first scheduled regular-season game at St. Johns on Wednesday, April 2. I will say this has been one like no other in preparation for a season, he said, but the success of our basketball team playing in the state Final Four will provide opportunities for our younger kids early in the season. Having 15 pitching wins returning from a staff that had a 1.37 team ERA is definitely a positive and something we look to build on and use to our advantage. Our team experience of playing against some of the best competition last year should help us, once we get our team together and get some work in. Defensively, we should have some versatility and should be sound with a number of players having three years of varsity playing experience. We feel our base-running needs to improve in 2014. Wharton expects Paulding, Jefferson, Lincolnview, Bluffton and Spencerville to be other contenders for the NWC title. Historically, Crestview has the most titles with 18. Paulding has 13. No other school has more than seven. Wharton is assisted by Terry Crowle, Gregg Mosier, Doyle Sheets and Tony Springer. ----SOFTBALL By SEAN LaFONTAINE [email protected] CONVOY - High expectations are nothing new to the Crestview softball program. That holds true especially in 2014, with most of last seasons lineup returning - starting in the circle. All of our pitching is back from last year, explained newly-anointed Crestview coach Carl Etzler. Terra Crowle, who was a state champion as a freshman, will be back as a junior. Kirstin Hicks is a senior who will be back to throw. We need their leadership both on and off the field. Hicks and Crowle were both first-team allNWC selections a year ago and also figure to be two of the teams stronger players on offense. Senior infielder Brooke Bowen is back after earning second-team all-NWC honors, as is junior shortstop Mackenzie Riggenbach (honorable mention). Seniors Nicole McClure is back in the starting lineup and Courtney Grote seeks a starting spot while lending relief in the circle. The Knights had a down season last year (13-10), which saw them tie for the conference title but fall to rival Lincolnview in the sectional tournament. They hope to bounce back to state-tournament form in 2014 after claiming the title in 2012. I think one of the big areas is in 2012 when we won the state championship we had nine seniors and seven of them were on the field all the time, explained Etzler. Last year we had to replace that team and center it around Hicks, Crowle and Riggenbaugh. This year we have some experience coming back on the varsity level, even though we will have a few newcomers. The Lady Knights hope to fill a few holes from last season to return to form. We will be pretty balanced this year but the biggest thing we have talked about is we have to improve defensively. We cant allow our opponents to have four or five outs in an inning, so we are really expecting our defense to play better this year, Etzler continued. As far as the positives, Etzler is happy to have plenty of speed to work with in the lineup: I think what we will see from Crestview this year that we havent seen in the past is we have some good speed throughout the lineup. We will try to utilize that speed both offensively and defensively and try to put some pressure on the other team. Crestview will also have plenty of lefty hitters to throw other teams off: This is also the

March 2014 The Herald Spring Sports 31

CONVOY The outlook for Crestviews baseball team couldnt be much brighter. The Knights return seven of nine starters from last years Division IV state semifinalist, including, most notably, senior pitchers Damian Helm and Bryce Richardson. Both were first-team all-Northwest Conference players, Helm the NWC co-Player of the Year. Helm, an intimidating 6-4 lefty who will pitch for IPFW next year, was 9-1 with a 1.36 earned run average. He also batted .348 and had a stellar fielding percentage of .982. Richardson was 5-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He spent most of his time at shortstop and hit .350. Also returning are two NWC senior honorable-mention players: Cam Etzler and Isaiah Simerman. Etzler, normally the teams centerfielder, hit .284 with 16 stolen bases. Simerman was usually the third baseman, hitting .300 with 25 runs batted in. Other starters returning are junior rightfielder Jordan Roop (.254), who will likely move to first base, junior catcher Nathan Owens (.256) and senior second baseman Brock Rolsten (.254). The Knights graduated three major contributors -- NWC first-team first baseman Jake Harmon, leftfielder/pitcher Venice Roberts and sub Nick Thomas. Senior Adrian Camp and junior Mitchell Rickard might be in right and left, respectively. However, others will be pushing for starting slots: senior Elliott Callow, juniors Jake Lippi, Preston Gerardot and Justin Overmyer and sophomores Colby Clifton and Jordan Miller. Twelve have pitcher listed as one of their positions, giving Wharton should have plenty of arms when the schedule gets busy with makeup games, as it inevitably does. Crestview was 19-8 in 2013 and finished first in the NWC with a 9-0 record. The Knights

first time I can remember that we will be able to have four left-handed hitters in the lineup at the same time. That might help with pitchers who arent used to throwing to left-handers and we will try and use that to our advantage as well. Etzler, who has been an assistant coach for the Lady Knights for years, takes over the reigns of the program from long-time coach Owen Pugh this season. The team should experience little turnaround, however. Coach Pugh is an icon in the game of softball and I respect his decision to retire and step away from the game, stated Etzler. But he will still help with some of the behind-the-scenes stuff. He has been very instrumental in getting some of the paperwork, scheduling and some of the internal things done for us this year. As far as the conference, expect a battle much like last year. I really believe this year the Northwest Conference is going to be a very competitive and balanced conference. I see Spencerville, Lincolnview and Paulding all being very good; on any given night, any team is going to be able to knock off the other, so we are going to have to come to play every night, he added. Crestview softball commences in a quad on Saturday, March 29, at Marion Local.

32 The Herald Spring Sports March 2014

By John Parent Times Bulletin Sports Editor [email protected] BASEBALL VAN WERT Replacing an All-Ohio outfielder is never an easy task but its one that Van Wert head coach Charlie Witten is saddled with as his Cougars prepare for the upcoming baseball season. Joey Hurless posted a .490 batting average and 1.221 OPS (on-base plus slugging) while stealing 28 bases for the Cougars last year and also ate some valuable innings on the pitchers mound. Hurless was first-team all-state in baseball, the first one weve had since 1983 or 84, noted Witten. Well certainly miss him. If it were just Hurless, it would be difficult enough, but also gone from last seasons 14-13 squad is Andrew Todd, who went 3-3 on the hill while leading the team in innings pitched and strikeouts. Returning letterwinners Brandt Henry, Ryan Stoller and Nathan Stoller will be looked upon to fill the void that Todd left behind. The Stollers each posted a 1.93 earned run average last season, Ryan in 32.2 innings and Nathan in 36.1. We return our top three pitchers from last year. All three of those guys (Stoller, Henry and Stoller) are pretty solid and have a good idea of what theyre doing out there on the mound, Witten added. I feel real good running those three guys out there at any time. Were going to be in the ballgame when (one of) those three guys are out there on the mound. The offense will rely on a handful of players maturing into larger roles on the varsity team. Tyler Williams is a senior coming back for us in right field; he had a really solid year for us last year at the plate, Witten continued. Nathan Stoller hit the ball real well last year in the 2 hole. Brandt hit the ball well last year and Justice Tussing, who is a sophomore, lettered last year and had a nice year. Jacob Braun didnt play a whole lot as a junior; hes got the ability to make some things happen offensively. Cody Keirns same situation; didnt play a lot last year but we look

VA N W E R T C O U G A R S Van Wert spring capsules

for him to do some decent things for us this season. While the Cougars have depth in numbers, Witten is hopeful that a few position battles will shake themselves out. I gave out 18 varsity uniforms and Im sure well have four or five guys going back and forth from varsity to JV, Witten noted. I think this is going to be my toughest year, playing-time-wise. The Cougar baseballers start at Jefferson on Saturday, March 29, in a doubleheader. ------SOFTBALL VAN WERT Coming off a 10-10 campaign, the Van Wert Lady Cougars are a team with plenty of talent but not a great deal of experience. Were going to be fairly young this year, noted Cougars head coach Mike McClure. Weve got some juniors that are playing new spots, some juniors that just came up from the JV team last year. Probably all-around, this is as talented a team as weve ever had here in Van Wert since Ive been here. My expectations are high but were going to take it one game at a time and see how we progress. After saying goodbye to four seniors from last seasons squad, one which finished 3-6 in the Western Buckeye League, McClure says his team has the tools to compete in a difficult conference. We just need the girls to compete, McClure said. Instead of getting nervous or upset when they make a mistake, they need to learn to shake those off and just compete. Gone is first-team all-WBL performer Brittany Bigham and all-WBL honorable mention Maggie Almandinger, leaving the Lady Cougars with an offense that will have to manufacture runs more than theyve had to in the past. If Hannah (Hulbert) gets back from her knee injury, she led off for us last year and did a really nice job, he continued. Brooke Brown hits the ball really well. Claire White is going to have to step up and hit the ball well. Sage Royer, Emily Bair - shes been hitting the ball well so far. Those are the girls were looking for to hit the ball for us. In the circle, the Cougars will press forward with a pair of young right-handers leading the way. Weve got some really talented young pitchers, McClure added. Brooke Brown is just a sophomore she pitched varsity last year for us and Kateri Steinecker is just a freshman. Because of the experience, I look for Brooke to probably be our number one but theyre both looking pretty good. The Lady Cougars return seven letterwinners from last season, including three seniors: White, Hulbert and Alyssa Bowen. The Lady Cougars begins on Tuesday, April 1, at Jefferson. -----TENNIS VAN WERT Coming off a 2013 season that saw the Cougars claim a third-place finish in the Western Buckeye League, Van Werts boys tennis team will aim for an even higher finish this year. The Cougars are a young squad, with just one senior and two juniors. Despite the youth, head coach Mitch Price has high expectations for his team. The guys that played last year as freshmen, theyve developed really well, said Price of his underclassmen. Theyve worked hard; the whole team overall has worked hard. Im really looking forward to sophomores Nick Etter, Lance Mansfield and Brandon Amstutz to really step up. Their games are going to have to develop if we are going to be top three in the WBL. I think weve put ourselves in a good position over the last couple of years to get where we want to be this year. Leading the charge for the Cougars, who were 8-4 overall last season and 6-3 in the WBL, is senior Eli Alvarez. Price says Alvarez will be counted on as a leader for this team. Hes a great leader, he knows the program real well, Price explained of Alvarez, who is likely to play as half of the first doubles tandem this season. Hes been with the team three years and well count on him a lot because he is the only senior. With a young team, you need an older guy to kind of be their role

model and get them in line. Though the Cougars are young, they return six letterwinners for last season. Among them is junior Eric Yueng, a player Price sees as one to watch. Yueng was our second singles last year and hes one of the two juniors. Hes going to be an important piece if were going to reach our goal of winning the WBL, Price noted. He placed third in the WBL last year and hes gotten a lot stronger. The Cougars welcome five freshmen to the squad this year and Price identified two as players who could make an impact this season. We have a lot of freshmen. Well count on some of them to play a little bit, Price added. I think Ryan Keber and Gabe Rollins those two will be close to helping us out, if needed. I look for those guys to probably get the most experience this year. Were going to have to count on a lot of young guys, whether thats a freshman or a sophomore, but thats how were going to win matches. Van Wert commences the hard-court campaign Friday, April 4, at home versus Defiance. Track and Field story will be in Fridays Delphos Herald.

after them. I think Lincolnview, Allen East and Paulding will be very strong and from top to bottom, the entire conference is really improving. It was a 3-0ay tie for first last year and I expect nothing less than a dogfight again. Assisting Coach Johnston are Randy Taylor, Lori Schwartz, Ed Shumate and Brian Moorman. Spencerville commences the new season at home on Monday, March 31, versus Parkway. of the NWC but not far behind are a handful of competitive teams. Assisting Geary in the coaching are Clay Erman, Rusty Thompson and Jeff Stockwell. The junior varsity unit has Rode, sophomore Damien Dudgeon, sophomore Gage Mercer, sophomore Easton Siefker and freshmen Andrew Foust, Jacob Boop, Tristan Moore, Brett Mahlie, Issac Williams, Eli Eddie, Cole Arroyo, Jordan Boop, Brandan Herron and Nick Long. Jefferson is slated to open at home versus Van Wert in twin-bill action on Saturday, March 29.

(Continued from Page 16) Weaknesses include depth in most events and currently having just one distance runner. We will be in a rebuilding mode this season, with the graduation of our most successful track class in school history, Horstman added. On both the boys and girls sides, the favorite in the PCL is Columbus Grove. The remainder of the girls roster are veteran participants in senior Emily Kehres (fourth year; throws), junior Lexi Heitemeyer (sprints), junior Erin Osting (2 years;

hope to put together a strong 4x800 relay; Baily is a good high jumper and Joey is an experience vaulter, Coach Grothaus commented. We lost a tremendous senior class from last year. We took a hit in the hurdles, pole vault, throws and distance races with the loss of Jake. We will have to rebuild with our young athletes. We hope to challenge for a PCL title and be competitive in the NWC. It is a rebuilding year and the kids are going to have to work hard to reach their goals. Spencerville and Bluffton will be very

strong in a balanced NWC. Ada continues to get much stronger, Allen East always has been strong in recent years as well and Lincolnview will be in the hunt as well. We hope to be competitive in the always-strong NWC. In the PCL, we look to develop depth as the season progresses to be in contention to defend our title. Assistant coaches are Bob Baxter, Rick Maag, Mike Brodwolf, Caleb Arthur and Jason Jay. Grove commences the new season in a home quad on Tuesday, April 1.

(pitcher/third base; 16 RBIs, 17 runs, 10 BBs; 1-2, 6.91 ERA). The fifth veteran is senior right-hander and potential ace, along with Thompson Tyler Rice (pitcher/right field/first base; .292 BA; 5-4 mark, 2.63 ERA, 25 Ks). Geary is also counting on a pair of juniors coming back from surgery: lefty-swinging/ throwing catcher Nick Fitch (lettered as a freshman) the likely starter behind the plate and southpaw Gaige Rassman (outfield/first base; coming off Tommy John surgery). Overall, we have good team athletic ability; we should improve everything we do in 2014, Geary noted. What we need to get better at is baseball IQ; that needs to rise a few notches for this team to get where it wants to be. With Nick returning, that allows us to move Austin around the infield making us better there and pitch more. Jordan will more than likely be a long reliever two or three innings rather than a starter. Zavier had labrum surgery, so he wont play center field this year like last; wed love to have him back as a pinch-runner eventually. Geary must replace the graduated Drew Kortokrax (injury-plagued the previous 2 seasons; pitcher/outfielder/DH; first-team NWC, .463 BA, 29 RBIs, 3 home runs; 3 letters), reliever Zach Ricker (2 letters, second base/ third base; 4-3, 4.37 ERA), Zach Kimmett (2 letters, first base/catcher; .479 BA, 9 2Bs, 25 RBIs), Seth Wollenhaupt (2 letters, left field/ right field; .286 BA, 15 runs, 14 RBIs), Dylan Haehn (2 letters, outfielder), Tyler Wrasman (second base/third base/shortstop; .260 BA, 11 runs, 16 RBIs) and Gage Townsend-Schleeter (left field/center field). The rest of the varsity lineup has junior lefty Ryan Bullinger (switch-hitter; first base/ outfield), junior Jesse Stemen (second base), junior Kurt Wollenhaupt (second base), sophomore Josh Teman (outfield/pitcher), sophomore Adam Rode, freshman Jace Stockwell (shortstop/second base) and classmate Hunter Binkley (utility/pitcher). With a roster full of youth and experience, were expecting to compete in a very competitive NWC, Geary added. We have a very experienced pitching staff with Ross, Tyler (Rice), Jordan and Austin to start with and Hunter, Josh, Ryan and Jace as newcomers. Ultimately, how well we are defensively and how far out bats come around will be the telling tale. Jace is a slick-fielding freshman and Hunter is a utility guy that can play several positions well. Wed like to play small-ball and manufacture runs, using our overall team speed to the utmost advantage. Everyone is picking Crestview at the top

Stober

Cook (3 years; infield; 2.41 BA), centerfielder Fallon Van Dyke (3 years) and veteran Kayla Kill (catcher/infielder). A couple of others chose to sit out 2014. We look to be more competitive this year than last year. We have been developing more pitchers this year in the offseason, Stober said. We will be very young with only five juniors/seniors total. The upperclassmen will be expected to show a lot of leadership. There will be some growing pains this year but we have a lot of good young talent and we will expect a lot out of our young girls this year. Amongst the promising newcomers are freshman Abby Parkins, freshman Kaylin Hartsock and freshman Danielle Harmon. We have a team with some inexperience but a desire to get better and work hard at the fundamentals, Stober concluded. The girls have been working extremely hard to improve. This will be another good year in the conference. We have a lot of strong teams and competition will be at its highest level. The remainder of the roster has sophomore Sophia Wilson, sophomore Kiersten Teman, sophomore Rileigh Tippie, sophomore Claire Thompson, sophomore Mackenzie Harvey, sophomore Brandy White, sophomore Jessica Pimpas, freshman Victoria Brunswick freshman Kylie White, freshman Makaya Dunning, freshman Kiya Wollenhaupt, freshman Brittany Phillips, freshman Cheyanna Scirroco, freshman Kaitlyn Antrican, freshman Kaylin Hartsock and freshman Danielle Harmon. Assistant coach is Heather Brickner. Jefferson is set to commence the 2014 campaign on Tuesday, April 1, at home versus Van Wert.
