EPIC E-5 Re NED Re Planetarium Facility

The document proposes building a planetarium facility with digital projectors to serve as a dome theater in the city-county area. It would be funded through admission fees, sponsors, naming rights, and grants. The goal is to boost tourism, especially downtown, and provide an educational resource for residents and students. Compared to older planetarium technology, the digital projectors would be less expensive to maintain while allowing for a variety of science-based programs beyond just astronomy to attract a wider audience.

Concept:

Planetarium
(digital projectors to make it a dome theater)

How to pay for it: Admission fees, sponsors, naming rights, tie-in with the library, grants, donations, etc.

The economic development idea of this concept is to bring tourism to the city-county area, especially to the down town area. Incidentally, there will be an educational use for city-county residents, including students, as well. In addition, the presence of this facility will add to the quality of life other advantageous reputation issues for the city-county area. Note that this kind of facility would not likely have been feasible with the old planetarium projector technology. The new digital technology is not only less expensive with less maintenance cost, but also permits use of a large number of digital programs to be projected in the facility, all with narration (reducing the need for an operator/lecturer skilled in astronomy). In addition, some of the digital programs extend to numerous other science topics for all ages and interests other than just astronomy, as was the case with the old white dot projector technology. This variety of attractions in programs permits appeal to a wider and otherwise less interested portion of the market within the population, as well as permitting offering different and new programs indefinitely.
