Blood Pressure Regulation in the Cardiovascular System

Short term blood pressure regulation involves controlling heart rate, stroke volume, and vascular resistance. Long term regulation controls the kidneys. The two major arterial baroreceptors are located in the carotid sinus and aortic arch. Increased blood pressure sends more impulses to the brain and activates the parasympathetic nervous system while inhibiting the sympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate and constricting blood vessels. Decreased blood pressure has the opposite effect. The adrenal gland releases epinephrine and norepinephrine. Juxtaglomerular cells in the kidneys monitor low blood pressure and release renin which acts on angiotensinogen in the blood. Angiotensin II causes vasoconstriction and sodium
