Invention of Polyurethane by Dr. Bayer

Polymer foams were first created in the 1930s and 1940s, with foamed polystyrene being invented in 1931. Polyurethane was invented by Otto Bayer at the start of World War II and was initially used as a rubber replacement and coating to protect materials like metal and wood. A few years after the war, flexible polyurethane foam was invented and started being used for cushioning in furniture and automotive interiors. New technologies in the following decades made polymer foams more widely used, introducing methods such as injection molding, twin screw foaming, and extrusion techniques.
