Microbiology E-test Guide

This document provides instructions for performing E-tests to determine antibiotic minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for various bacteria. It lists the appropriate incubation conditions, media, and incubation times for different bacteria. It also provides guidance on when to perform E-tests for specific antibiotics and bacterial groups, such as routinely testing gonorrhea isolates or testing Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas for resistance to meropenem. Instructions are given on reading and interpreting the E-test results.

Make 0.5 McF solution in sterile saline (for mucoid colonies make approx 1 McF). Lawn the plate. Let it dry for 5-10 min. Apply the strip within 15 min of lawning. Reading Read when semi-confluent. If no zone intersecting the strip ie very sensitive - report as less than the lowes conc in the strip. If no inhibition - report as more than the highest conc in e-test strip. If MIC falls between markings report the higher value. For haemolytic organism disregard haemolysis, measure the inhibition. Incubating condition
