Ayurveda Basic Principles

The document provides an overview of some key concepts in Ayurveda, including: 1) Ayurveda originated over 5,000 years ago in India and is based on balancing the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), which are composed of combinations of the five elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth). 2) Health results from harmony among the doshas, digestive fire, seven tissues, and three waste products, while disease stems from imbalances in these systems. 3) Diet, lifestyle, and seasonal routines all influence dosha balance and are important aspects of Ayurvedic treatment and disease prevention.

Aside from constitutional factors and diet, the doshasare affected by changes within the environment. The most consistent environmental influence is the changing of the seasons. Ritu means season and charya means routine. Ritucharya therefore means the routine followed in the different seasons. Cleansing and detox procedures known as Panchakarma are normally performed during these transitional junctures. Following a daily routineforyouruniquebodytypeisknownasDinacharya. Ayurveda encourages awareness of lifestyle habits accordingly. Thismeansmodifyingsleephabits, dietchoicesandactivities.
