AGE Pathophysiology

This document outlines the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal infections. It shows that gastrointestinal infections can be caused by both non-modifiable factors like age and modifiable environmental factors like food handling. The microorganisms attach to the small intestine and enter mature cells, causing pain by stimulating chemoreceptors. This leads to structural changes and inflammation in the small intestine bowel that allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, increase white blood cells, and release endotoxins and pyrogens that cause fever, diarrhea by inhibiting sodium and water reabsorption, and increasing fluid secretion.
