Urinary Retention
Also known as bladder emptying problem A common urological problem with many possible causes. Abnormal holding of urine in the bladder Acute urinary retention sudden inability to urinate, causing pain and discomfort. Chronic urinary retention persistent presence of urine left in the bladder after incomplete emptying.
Causes
Obstruction in urinary system Stress Neurological problems Benign prostatic hyperplasia
prostatitis
Infection Medications (anticholinergic or alphaadrenergic)
Bladder stones
constipation
Signs and Symptoms
Dull low abdominal discomfort Distended bladder Difficulty fully emptying the bladder Weak dribble or stream of urine Loss of small amounts of urine during the day Inability to feel when bladder is full Lack of urge to urinate Strained efforts to push urine out of the bladder Frequent urination Nocturia (waking up more than two times at night to urinate)
Diagnostic Tests
Urine sample- to test for infection which might be a cause of urinary retention Bladder scan - uses a portable ultrasound device that can determine how much urine is in your bladder
X-ray and CT scan - show a spot where the urinary tract is narrowed or obstructed.

Planning and Implementation
Urethral catheterization is an initial nursing management Surgery for women with cystocele or rectocele Instruct patient to increase fluid intake. Teach the patient with urinary retention and infrequent voiding to urinate by the clock.
