Urinary Retention

Urinary retention is a urological problem where abnormal holding of urine in the bladder occurs, either acutely or chronically. It can be caused by obstruction in the urinary system, neurological problems, medications, infections, or prostate issues. Signs include low abdominal discomfort, difficulty emptying the bladder fully, and frequent or painful urination. Diagnostic tests include urine and bladder scans to check for infection or obstruction. Initial nursing management is often urethral catheterization, with further treatment depending on the underlying cause.
