317—339PREFACE TO THE First EpDITION
Iam highly delighted to place in the hands of my esteemed readers the book “Mastering
Java Programs”. The motivation came after getting a tremendous success of the books
“Mastering C++ Programs” and “Mastering C Programs”.
Java is a programming language originally developed by James Gosling at Sun
Microsystems and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems’ Java platform.
The language derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model
and fewer low-level facilities. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode (class file)
that can run on any Java Virtual Machine (JVM) regardless of computer architecture.
On 13 November 2006, Sun released much of Java as free and open source software
under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). On 8 May 2007 Sun finished the
process, making Jave’s code available under free software/open-source distribution terms,
aside from a small portion of code to which Sun did not hold the copyright.
‘There were five primary goals in the creation of the Java language:
1. It should be “simple, object oriented and familiar”.
2. It should be “robust and secure”.
3. It should be “architecture neutral and portable”.
4, It should execute with “high performance”.
5. It should be “interpreted, threaded and dynamic’.
Java is an excellent choice for your first programming language. This book is written
for people who are computer literate, but have no programming experience. The overall goal
of this book is to help users write programs that are :
« Easy to write
* Easy to read
* Easy to understand
* Easy to modify
Thave put my sincere efforts and knowledge to make you understand the subject matter
in the simplest and easiest form. Valuable suggestions are always most welcome.
WISH YOU A GRAND SUCCESS in your examination, and a very bright future in the
field of Computer Science.
