Scanning Techniques for Fast Reading

Scanning is a fast reading technique used to locate specific information within a text. It involves stating the target information, anticipating where it may appear based on clues, and selectively reading sections like headings and bold terms. Examples where scanning is useful include newspapers to get daily news quickly, magazines to find articles of interest, and brochures to learn key details efficiently. While similar, scanning differs from skimming in that the latter is used to grasp the overall meaning of a text, not find a particular fact.

By : NUR SYAFIQAH BINTI ADAM

What is meant by scanning?

Scanning is a fast reading technique. It's a way of reading to look for specific information in a text.

HOW TO SCAN

* State the specific information you are looking for.

* Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers.

* Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain the information you are looking for.

* Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.

* In a dictionary or phone book, use the 'header' words to help you scan. You can find these in bold type at the top of each page.

* If you are reading for study, start by thinking up or writing down some questions that you want to answer. Doing this can focus your mind and help you find the facts or information that you need more easily.

Example of scanning
The Newspaper to quickly get the general news of the day Magazines to quickly discover which articles you would like to read in more detail Business and Travel Brochures to quickly get informed

How is 'skimming' different to 'scanning'?

The term skimming is often confused with scanning. Remember: Skimming is used to obtain the gist (the overall sense) of a piece of text. Example : Use skimming to get the gist of a page of a textbook to decide whether it is useful and should therefore be read more slowly and in more detail.

Scanning is used to obtain specific information from a piece of text. Example : Use scanning to find a particular number in a telephone directory.
