There are four major types of information systems that serve different organizational decision-making levels: 1. Executive support systems support long-term, unstructured decisions at the executive level. 2. Management information systems support weeks- and months-long, semi-structured decisions at the managerial level, obtaining data from transaction processing systems. 3. Decision support systems also support the managerial level. 4. Transaction processing systems support day-to-day, structured decisions at the operational level.

Four major types of systems serve the various organizational levels: 1.executive support systems (ESS); 2.management information systems (MIS); 3.decision-support systems (DSS); and 4.transaction processing systems (TPS). However, each of the different kinds of systems may have components that are useful to individuals or groups at other levels of the organization.
