Power Formulas and Calculations Guide

This document provides formulas and concepts related to electrical power including: Ohm's law defines the relationship between voltage, current and resistance. The power equation defines power as voltage times current or current squared times resistance. The power triangle relates voltage, current and power factor for calculating apparent power. Power factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power and capacitors can correct displacement but not total power factor.

Formulas

Power = Work done Energy = Time required Time Output energy Input energy

Efficiency =

Ohm's Law
V = IR I= V R R= V I

The Power Equation

P (watts) = V (volts) x I (amps) P = I R P= V2 R

The Power Triangle

kVA =

kW2 + kvar2
kvar = kVA x sin

kW = kVA x cos

Power Factor
Displacement power factor - equal to the displacement angle between the current
flowing in the load and the supply voltage. It is equal to the cosine of Phi. Capacitors can correct displacement power factor effects.

Total power factor is a measure of kW divided by kVA and includes the effects of
distortions known as harmonics. Its important to note that capacitors can only correct displacement not total power factor.

Calculating Power Usage

Single phase power Three phase power P = V x I x PF P = 3 x V x I x PF

Calculating Motor Input Power

Input power = Horsepower x 0.746 x Load Factor Efficiency
