4.3: Forces Everyday forces 1.
Forces can be used to : push objects pull objects change the shape of an object may cause an object to speed up, slow down or change direction
2. Measuring forces using a newton meter to weigh an object. measure pulling forces suych as force needed to pull open a drawer.
3. Unit of force newton (N)
Mass and Weight 1. Mass measure of the amount of matter in an object measured in kilograms (kg)
2. weight downward force acting on a mass is caused by gravity measured i newtons (N)
3. Earths gravitational field the strength is 10 N/kg = it pulls with a force of 10N on each kilogram of mass. 1kg mass will weigh 10N.
4. On the moon: Friction 1. Friction is the force that stops things moving or causes them to move more slowly. Occurs only when two surface are in contact with each other. Rough surfaces produces more friction than a smooth surface. an object will weigh less than on Earth because the gravitational field on the Moon is less than on Earth. mass does not change regardless on the Moon or on Earth.
2. Disadvantages of friction 3. Advantages of friction Methods to reduce friction Example: Melted snow between the ski and the snow lubricates the ski and reduces the frictioin. Skiers also wax their skis to reduce the friction even more.
Friction and cycling
Drag Opposing force experienced by an object when movuing against a gas or liquid. Caused by friction between the liquid or gas and the surface of the object that is moving through it. As an object moves faster through a liquid of gas, the drag acting on it increases.
Air resistance Is the drag caused when an object moves through air. Objects with streamlined shapes to reduce friction.
