Bowman Gray

Twelve-year-old Constance sobbed day and night. The excruciating neck pain seemed impossible to endure. She could barely move. At the CURE hospital in Blantyre, Malawi doctors discovered that her bones were infected and crumbling. The pressure on her spinal cord would eventually kill her. So a CURE physician operated and lifted her neck with a Halo traction, allowing the bones to heal properly. Only a few days after surgery, Constance was bustling around the hospital talking, walking, and playing with her friends . . . as any young girl should.

Unconventional Method
Unconventional Method provides strategy and innovation counsel for business, nonprofit, and ministry organizations. The design of their identity was near completion when the departure of a coprincipal necessitated a complete change of name and direction.

2009 Through collaboration with the client, a list of over 750 potential names was developed, from which the final was selected. The logo was resolved by combining two disparate metaphors: gears (representative of working together harmoniously) and stairs (moving onward and upward). A subtle reversal of ns within the wordmark reinforces the notion of an alternative practice.

Pratt & Larson Tile

One of the largest suppliers of stone and hand-crafted tile in Washington state, Pratt & Larson works with architects, interior designers, builders, and retail homeowners to develop customized installations. Originally begun as a signage project, it was recommended that a new identity be implemented as well.

2006 The proposed solution was inspired by old manufacturers emblems, as might be found on a tile back. The ampersand was retained as a point of visual interest, and as a continuity link with the existing branding. While the original proposal was appreciated on its merits, the client ultimately requested a more subtle logo modification.

The Seattle law firm created by Jon Ferguson and Jeff Bean specialized in antitrust, commercial, personal injury and government liability litigation.

Specializing in large format fine art reproductions, Image Wizards has pioneered processes and materials that allow artwork to be transferred to brushed aluminum, glass, fine woods and other materials.

Developed through Punch Services, their web template incorporated backdrops that would appeal to their target market, but that would also highlight the brilliant color and light-reflective properties of the media.

Kathryn Henneman is introducing her new Arroya Vista series on ImageWizards newest product offering, AluminArte, which is the reproduction of art on luminescent brushed aluminum. This innovative AluminArte process allows the transfer of high resolution art, graphics and photography to a variety of different mediums. Image Wizards applies proprietary coatings to a variety of substrates resulting in satin and high-gloss finishes. The images are directly fused into the coating, not on the surface, creating a brilliant image with long-lasting durability and unsurpassed image quality.

What is the quality of the reproduction? The quality of the reproduction is the same as a fine quality giclee. The process and quality of the equipment is very similar. The advantage of reproducing your artwork with ImageWizards process is the enhancement of the artwork by the properties of our materials and rigid nature of our materials and the rigid nature of our materials eliminates the need for mounting, mats, glass, and frames. What is the durability of the process? Our materials and coatings have been engineered to provide a long life for the image. Image life is typically 50 years. You should treat the imaged wood or aluminum in the dame way you would a giclee. Indirect sunlight is fine, but the materials are not intended for direct sunlight outdoor use. How do I clean the product? You can use Windex with a soft cloth or paper towel. Spray the Windex on the cloth or towel first. Our high gloss aluminum product can be cleaned with Maguiars Cleaner Wax. What is your minimum order? We have a new customer special in place to allow a 16 x 20 spec. sample to be reproduced from you image for $125. This includes the digital capture and proofing. We can also work with you in developing your market. Please call us and we can determine what will work best for you.

Why Ghana? According to Isabel,

Honestly, this is a God thing.

I wanted to go to Kenya, but all the slots filled up. I applied to the Ghana program and got in. Interestingly, the Kenya program ended up being cancelled because of the unrest there. I chose Africa, because I wanted to get a look at life and health care in a developing nation. Throughout her life, and especially now that she is studying in Ghana, Isabel is mindful of what God has been doing. Everyday I am overcome by my reality . . . the very fact that I can travel and see new places is such a blessing! God has shown me so many things that have been life changing in large and small ways. My faith is growing by leaps and bounds, says Isabel.

Our Story
Graduate Snapshot Isabel Malone
Isabel Malone (2005 TPH alumna) is a student at Hope College in Holland, MI. She is a chemistry major with plans to graduate in 2009. Through Hope College, she is spending this semester studying at the University of Ghana in Legon, Ghana.

Isabel is quick to point out that The Potters House made a profound impact in her life. According to Isabel, The Potters House prepared me for my experience abroad by urging [us as] students to be more globally conscious. In various classes students are expected to have knowledge about what is going on abroad, not just at home. The enduring faith in God that The Potters House helped foster is a good thing to have on any journey. Looking toward the future, Isabel hopes to work in the field of medicine for under-represented populationswhether that is in developing nations or right here at home. She would also like to be involved in health care policy formation to make health care more accessible to everyone.

VOLUME 4 APRIL 2007

CURE International acquired Oasis Hospital from TEAM in 2006. The focus of the hospital will remain maternal and infant health, but CURE plans to offer additional surgical services in the future and use the hospital as a training center for medical staff serving in the CURE network. United Arab Emirates Over its 47-year history, CURE-Oasis has delivered more than 80,000 babies from families from the UAE, Oman, and nearly every country of the world. In many cases, those being born at CUREOasis today represent the third generation of Oasis Babies in their family. But the hospital provides far more than just maternity care. On its 14-acre campus, CURE-Oasis provides a church center for a variety of Christian worship opportunities for the non-nationals who make up 57 % of Al Ains community. (The population of Al Ain is 550,000.) This is critical as the hospitals staff comes from 29 different nations and speaks a wide range of languages. CURE-Oasis has also created a number of community outreach programs for patients and their families. These programs include prenatal classes, post-birth home follow-up and special health care programs for farm workers and other people in need. A new program was launched this month for in-school medical care for Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care-Special Needs School. This school is for Emirate National children with physical and mental disabilities. CURE is honored to have the opportunity to be of support to these special children. It is a joy for me and my wife, Elizabeth, to serve the people of the UAE and Greater Gulf Region. While many see conflict, we see the common desire for finding peace for ones heart. How better to demonstrate Gods love than CUREs mission? We know that healing changes everything, said David Printy, Executive Director of CURE-Oasis.

When Drs. Pat and Marian Kennedy, who were working with TEAM International, arrived in Al Ain (United Arab Emirates) in the late 1950s, health care for women and their babies was horrendous. Maternal and infant mortality rates stood at 50%. The population of the country was declining due to these tragic numbers. CURE is proud to continue the excellent work begun by the Kennedys in 1960. The Kennedys opened the first maternal hospital in Al Ain at the invitation of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brother Sheikh Shakhbut. Having experienced American medical care in Muscat and Bahrain, the rulers asked the Kennedys (TEAM) to open a similar hospital in Al Ain. Needless to say, life and health care have changed dramatically in Al Ain since Oasis Hospital began in 1960. A population that was once decimated has since surged. Infant mortality rates that stood at 50% are now less than 1%, and maternal mortality is almost unheard of.

In the past five years, more than 4,000 children have received life-changing surgeries at the Beit Trust CURE International Hospital of Malawi. As part of a number of activities to celebrate the five-year anniversary, the hospital hosted National Orthopedic Health Week at the end of March. This exciting week-long event was filled with activities and seminars focused on health, prevention, and the various services offered at the hospital. The event was a great way to raise health awareness in the country, as well as raise awareness of the hospital and generate more local support. The official event launch began with a ceremony detailing National Orthopedic Health Week and included tours of the hospital facilities and the launch of the CURE Clubfoot Worldwide program in Malawi. Many local government officials attended the ceremony. The rest of the week was dedicated to a flurry of various activities, including a Career Day for local high school students, presentations and lectures on posture and exercise, fitness assessments and a CURE Awareness Day at a local shopping area. A fundraising dinner was held as well, featuring music, slideshows and guest speaker, Dr. Chris Lavy, Director of Research and Education for CURE International. National Orthopedic Health Week was a wonderful week for Beit CURE Malawi to establish new relationships within the local community, thus raising awareness and more in-country support. With more local support, the hospital hopes to reach even more of the children within Malawi who are in dire need of care. Open just five years, Beit CURE Malawi sees 4,000 patients and performs over 2,000 surgeries annually.

Strategic International Partnerships

CURE Clubfoot Worldwide,

University of Iowa based Ponseti International Association and CBM have worked closely together
in a strategic partnership over the past two years to advance the cause of clubfoot treatment worldwide.

Ethiopia
Since CURE Clubfoot Ethiopia was launched the working relationship with the government has continued to improve. This relationship has resulted in allowing us to secure lower cost plaster and an official letter to Health branch offices raising awareness and inviting referrals to the network clinics.

Malawi
The program now has fifteen (15) clinics, with the one at Beit-CURE in Blantyre leading in quality and volume.

Kenya
CCK continues to do well in successfully managing a program which is integrating more and more with existing Kenyan structures. They have secured partner clinics that have contributed to the costs of training and have made agreements with other clinics where our only financial input is to provide braces (and collect data). In the coming quarter there will be a clinic coordinators meeting to discuss ways to improve service and reduce costs.

Training A refresher training for

all clinics was held in October as well as an awareness raising presentation at the annual OCO meeting. In March a large training for new clinic locations will be held in Blantyre with Dr. Steve Mannion, Manchester, England, in attendance.

PIA provides the evidence based medical treatment protocols that are utilized in the CCW programs and continues to provide critical support for medical training and ongoing education. One event of special significance was a live presentation by Dr. Ponseti via the Internet to a major medical training which launched the clubfoot program in Delhi India in January 2009. CBM programs in five countries provided very important start-up financial support in 2008 and have worked closely to help incorporate clubfoot networks being established into existing CBM programs in community based rehabilitation.

Imagine having the power to cure 125 million children. With CURE International, you dont have to imagine it. Its what weve started doing right now.

Training In October a National Clubfoot Symposium was held with Norwegian Orthopedic Surgeon Peter Klungsoyr presenting. 90% of the countrys orthopedic surgeons attended and general agreement that the Ponseti method is the best and first method for CTEV treatment in children under two years. Training has been followed up with clinic visits to all the clinic locations.

Training Eldoret (26 participants from 12 hospitals) and Central region (16 participants from 7 clinics) trainings were completed in the last quarter, as was a parents meeting in Nakuru.

Summary
From Business Plan to Successful Proof of Concept
Since starting the first pilot in Kenya in 2006, CCW has been developing and refining its model for clubfoot countrywide programs. Utilizing networks of existing in-country providers has given CCW the ability to establish programs with limited overhead and cost. With the critical funding support of a number of key donors, CCW has progressed from concept to operational program. Doubling the number of country programs in 2008 signals that we are prepared to continue to grow rapidly. While we are deeply thankful for this success, there are thousands of children to be reached and much more to be done. We are ready to expand existing programs and add new countries as soon as the funding is available.

Zambia
Support supervision visits have been carried out this quarter and the next nationwide training meeting is being planned. Unfortunately the country coordinator resigned in late December to pursue further education. A new country coordinator has been hired and will begin in March.

Niger
The first treatment site in the country, Hope House, was launched in late 2008. Staff was trained and is now treating patients. Dr. Chris Lavy will be visiting Niger in early 2009 to run small training meetings at Galmi SIM hospital and potentially at LaMorde.

Ghana
The joint program with the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) was launched with the first formal training on November 20-21. This training was attended by Dr. Michael Mendelow from FOCOS. Five clinic locations have been established and patient volume continues to grow. The counseling program will officially launch in first quarter 2009.

So far, weve been able to transform the lives of 450,000 disabled kids. Join us as we do the same for others who are still waiting for a cure.

Rapid Expansion in 2008

Over 4,200 Children Treated Since Inception

CURE Clubfoot Worldwide (CCW) continues to be blessed with progress. In 2008, CCW grew from 6 countries to 12 countrywide programs. In addition, the Delhi India program is scheduled to begin in January and 9 more countries are on hold pending funding. CCW increased the number of children treated over 300% during the year. In 2008 alone, CCW reached 3,400 childrenbringing the total to over 4,200. 1

Anna Cuthel is the CCW Africa Regional Manager located in Nairobi, Kenya. In addition to introducing Ghana and Niger, major projects for this year included the development of parent education materials, successful introduction of the counseling program and refining the CCW operations model.

Rwanda/Great Lakes Region

CCW has been invited by CBM and the local organization to provide a manager for the country program that has been initiated. We continue to search for funding for this role. Other requests receivedon hold, pending funding:

But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you my be sons of your Father in heaven. Love the Lord your God with all you heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome Ggod, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night. A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves mewill be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Fathers commands and remain in his love.I have told you this so that my joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one that his, that he lay down his life for his friends. Praise the Lord. ZLB Plasma (now CSL Plasma), collects blood plasma and processes it into lifesaving therapies. These therapies improve the quality of life for people with rare diseases such as genetic emphysema, Von Willebrand disease, hemophilia and primary immune deficiencies.

To overcome the stigma associated with donating, posters were developed to explain how medicines derived from plasma collection help others. Other posters were created around promotions and giveaways, which provided incentive for repeat donors.

P OSTERS

for Peter Hollingsworth & Associates

First Night
First Night was an outdoor artistic and cultural celebration held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Based on an event that began in Boston in 1976, First Night provided a drug- and alcohol-free alternative to the traditional New Years Eve party.

1992 Buttons (required for event entry), programs, billboards and posters were designed for the event, via Peter Hollingsworth & Associates. Since many retailers resisted the idea of placing a large notice in their store window, the poster was designed to be displayed either as a whole, or separated into three smaller posters, with all pertinent information present on each third.

Jlianne Cellars is a winemaker located in central Washington State. They produce several varieties, including late harvests and ice winesvery sweet/low alcohol dessert wines for which the Pacific Northwest climate is wellsuited to create.

Labels for the ice wine are intended to suggest the frozen conditions in which they are formed (hot days combined with frosts/freezing at night leads to high sugar content in the grapes). The labels were designed in such a way that the winery name could be read in both vertical (display) and horizontal (storage) positions.

La Tortilleria
The Calhoun brothers are the sons of retired missionaries and spent their childhood in Mexico. While operating a landscaping business in Winston-Salem, they noticed that their Latino employees had no local source for fresh tortillas. The Calhouns decided to travel to Guadalajara to study tortillamaking, then return to North Carolina to open a manufacturing facility.

1999 La Tortilleria approached Punch Marketing to develop labeling for its products, intended for placement in Hispanic retail outlets across the country. Friendly, character-based illustrations originated with the client request for a purple crow mascot.

Bowman Gray
The Wake Forest University School of Medicine remains one of the best medical schools in the United States. An annual orientation for incoming students is held at the Bowman Gray campus.

1994 The school hired Peter Hollingsworth & Associates to create t-shirts for its orientation attendees. The design is a mosiac that references the art deco tile found in the indoor pool at the Graylyn Center, where some of the orientation events took place. The design includes the infinity logo of North Carolina Baptist Hospital, where the teaching facility is located. t-shirt design
