Morphine Sulfate: Uses and Considerations

This document provides information on the central nervous system agent and analgesic morphine sulfate. It lists the drug's classification, dosages and routes of administration. The main actions are as a narcotic agonist binding to opioid receptors to produce analgesia, euphoria, respiratory depression and physical dependence. The indications given are for relief of severe acute and chronic pain as well as dyspnea and pain from acute left ventricular failure, pulmonary edema and myocardial infarction. Adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions and respiratory depression. Contraindications include hypersensitivity, increased intracranial pressure, and use during pregnancy. Nursing considerations include monitoring vital signs and watching for paradoxical reactions when administering the drug.
