RESPONSE ASSIGNMENT: After watching the movie The Dead Poets Society, and the spoken word poem To This Day, you will be given some time to reflect on the following two questions: 1) Why should we read/discuss poetry? 2) How does poetry live in the real world After sufficient reflection, you will write a personal response that addresses both questions. A personal response is just that its personal. You should relate both questions to YOU.

PERSONAL RESPONSE RUBRIC: I. Ideas and Impressions (5x2) Does the idea have merit? Very interesting/somewhat interesting/ not too interesting Does the introduction catch my attention? Yes/OK/No Is the question answered? Directly/Indirectly Is the idea insightful/perceptive/ straightforward/vague/minimal? Is the idea supported (detail)? Precise/specific/adequate/ imprecise/unrelated/lacking Does the piece conclude in a satisfactory fashion? Thought-provoking/OK/weak 5 Excellent: The students exploration of the topic is insightful. Perceptions and/or ideas are straightforward and relevant. Support is adequate and clarifies the students ideas and impressions. 2 Limited: The students exploration of the topic is vague. Perceptions and/or ideas are superficial and/or ambiguous. Support is imprecise and/or ineffectively related to the students ideas and impressions. 1 Poor: The students exploration of the topic is minimal. Perceptions and/or ideas

Stylistic choices are adequate and the students creation of tone is conventional. The unifying effect is appropriately developed. 2 Limited: The voice created by the student is indistinct. Stylistic choices are imprecise and the students creation of tone is inconsistent. The unifying effect is inadequately developed. 1 Poor: The voice created by the student is obscure. Stylistic choices impede communication and the students creation of tone is ineffective. A unifying effect is absent.
