Understanding PEMDAS in Algebra

The order of operations, PEMDAS, establishes the sequence for performing mathematical calculations. According to PEMDAS, expressions within parentheses should be evaluated first, followed by exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, and finally addition and subtraction from left to right. An example demonstrates applying PEMDAS to simplify a complex expression step-by-step.

1.

2 Order of Operations

When we are asked to simplify an algebraic expression, it usually makes a

big difference on which operations we choose to do first. To standardize the
order, people came up with the PEMDAS:

Parentheses:

The first rule is to always simplify what’s inside the parentheses first. By
parentheses, we mean any grouping symbol such as :
 ,  , , and .

Exponents:

The next things we simplify are exponents and other special functions that
you will learn in later courses. Such examples are

dy
sin, cos, tan, sec, csc, cot, log, , lim, and  .
dx x 0

Multiplication and Division, Left to Right:

The next operations we perform are multiplication, from left to right.

Addition and Subtraction, Left to Right:

The last operations we perform are addition and subtraction from left to
right.

Example:

33  92  3  6  5    (4) 2
 33  92  3(1)   (4) 2
 33  92 (3)  ( 4) 2
 27  81(3)  16
 27  243  16
 216  16
 200
