Bordeaux Mixture and Paste Preparation

The document provides instructions for preparing three different fungicide solutions: 1) Bordeaux mixture is prepared by dissolving copper sulfate and lime in water separately and then mixing together to create a 0.5% or 1% solution. The mixture is tested to ensure it is not too toxic before use. 2) A sticker solution is made by boiling rosin and washing soda to add sticking properties to the Bordeaux mixture for use in rainy conditions. 3) Bordeaux paste is created by dissolving equal amounts of copper sulfate and lime in water and mixing together. Chestnut compound contains copper sulfate and ammonium carbonate that are mixed and stored before dissolving in water to use as a soil drench.

Preparation of Fungicides
(A) Preparation of Bordeaux mixture (0.5 % or 1:1:100) 1) Dissolve 50 g of powdered copper sulphate in 5 litres of water in a plastic bucket. 2) Prepare milk of lime in another plastic bucket by dissolving 50 g of quick lime in 5 litres of water. 3) Pour the copper sulphate solution and the milk of lime from the above two vessels into a third one by gently stirring the mixture all the while. This will give a final volume of 10 litres of 0.5 % strength. 4) The mixture is to be tested before use for the presence of free copper, which is toxic to the plant. Dip a polished knife in the mixture. If the blade shows a reddish colour add lime to the mixture till the blade does not show staining on dipping. NB: For 1 % solution add 100 g Copper sulphate and 100 g quick lime Preparation of sticker solution In order to confer sticking qualities to Bordeaux mixture Rosin-washing soda mixture may be mixed. The addition of sticker is recommended for spraying during rainy season against phytophthora diseases. Method Boil 10 litres of water, preferably in an earthen pot, add 500 g good quality washing soda (sodium carbonate). Boil again until the solution becomes slightly of dark colour. Add 1 kg of powdered rosin in the boiling washing soda solution. Reduce the flame for avoiding frothing, foaming and spilling over. Boil the solution for 5-10 minutes till black bubbles appear. Cool down the solution until the temperature reaches 450C. The cool mixture (10 litres) is then added slowly to the prepared Bordeaux mixture (90 litres) under vigorous stirring. (B) Bordeaux paste Dissolve 100 g of Copper sulphate and 100 g of quick lime each in 500 g of water separately. Mix together to make one one kg of the paste. (C) Chestnut Compound The compound contains 60 g of Copper sulphate and 330 g of Ammonium carbonate. These two are well powdered and thoroughly mixed. The dry mixture is stored in an airtight glass container for 24 hours before use. About 25 g of this mixture is dissolved in a little hot water solution is made up 8 litres with cold water and used for soil drenching.
