Engineering Design Basics Guide

This document outlines the engineering design process as presented by Lydia anak Aling. It defines design as a plan or convention for constructing an object or system. Engineering design is described as a process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs, involving problem recognition, concept development, detailed design, prototyping, and testing. The document then walks through each step of the engineering design process and provides examples.

DESIGN
1) A plan

or convention for the construction of an object or a system.

2) To work out the structure or form of (something), as by making a sketch, outline, pattern, or plans. 3) Is the human power to conceive, plan, and realize products that serve human beings in the accomplishment of any individual or collective purpose.

WHAT IS AN ENGINEERING DESIGN?

A process of devising a system, component or process to meet desired needs. By; Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET)

ENGINEERING DESIGN
a) Using knowledge and know-how to achieve a desired outcome. b) To improve an existing situation c) To eliminate a problem d) New discovery or concept. e) It is creative problem solving.
A change has to be created.

Something different will be produced, and someone will have to decide what to do with the result.

ENGINEERING DESIGN
Engineering design are divided to 3 categories;
Component System

Industrial product/production

PREPARED BY: LYDIA ANAK ALING

ENGINEERING DESIGN
Component Design i. i. Require a detail achievement Require an analysis, calculation

Eg: shaft, gear, compressor etc

ENGINEERING DESIGN
System Design i. To improve achievement

ii.

Require an analysis, calculation

Eg: Air conditioning, pneumatic

ENGINEERING DESIGN
Industrial product/production i. Depend on customer requirement/needs

ii. Require an analysis, calculation iii. May perform the same task but different achievement Eg: can opener, chair, mixer etc.
