Officials announce results of New Years Eve Safe Ride Program Friday, January 4, 2013
Albany County Sheriff Craig D. Apple Sr. and STOP-DWI Administrator Lt. Kerry B. Thompson announce the details of Albany Countys twenty-ninth annual New Years Eve Safe Ride Program. The program was available in Albany County beginning at 10:00 p.m. on New Years Eve and ended at 2:00 a.m. on New Years Day and provided rides home, free of charge, to individuals who have been drinking and should not have been driving. Anyone that had been drinking within Albany County was instructed to call 1-800-LAW1010 to request a free ride home. During the time frame, 331 taxi cabs were dispatched to help numerous partiers get home safely. Although many took advantage of the free service which was sponsored by the Law Firm of Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, unfortunately there were ten individuals arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and there were two alcohol related crashes. This compares to 2011 when there were six arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and no alcohol related crashes. Since the Safe Ride Program began in 1982, thousands have been transported home safely and there has not been an alcohol related fatality on New Years Eve in Albany County.
