Drug Study

Ferrous sulfate is an iron supplement used to treat iron deficiency anemia. It provides 20 mg of elemental iron per 100 mg of ferrous sulfate. The recommended daily dosage is 150-300 mg of elemental iron per day for iron deficiency, or 15-30 mg per day during the last two trimesters of pregnancy. It works by providing elemental iron, which is essential for hemoglobin formation. It should be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal side effects, though this may decrease absorption. Enteric coating can further reduce side effects but also decreases iron absorption.
