Black powder explosion. Test explosion taking place at a research facility operated by what is today the UK's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL). This site is used to carry out tests relating to industrial health and safety. This explosion is of black powder (gunpowder), a mix of sulphur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate. Safety regulations help to avoid such explosions. Photographed in the 1980s.
