Intermediate Design Engineer
- Position: Intermediate Design Engineer
- Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
- Location: This position will be based in our office in Edmonton, Calgary or Regina. This position will be in-person.
- Pay Range: $110,000-135,000.
- Reports to: Construction Engineering Team Leader
- Interpret geotechnical investigation reports and laboratory test data to determine pile capacity, settlement behavior, etc.
- Perform geotechnical and structural design of pile foundations (e.g., CIP, CFA, and driven piles).
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, and technical reports.
- Coordinate with geotechnical, structural, and construction teams to resolve design and constructability issues.
- Provide technical support during construction, including RFIs and site visits.
- Contribute to value engineering, foundation optimization, and constructability reviews.
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and quality review of work completed by junior engineers.

- Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in foundation pile design. Familiarity with construction methods for driven and bored piles. Experience providing technical oversight and mentoring junior staff. Solid working knowledge of Canadian codes and standards.
- Soft skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication. Attention to detail and commitment to public safety. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and lead design tasks.
- Preferred skills: Proficiency with pile design software (e.g., LPile, PLAXIS 2D/3D, GRLWEAP, etc.). Strong knowledge of soil mechanics and deep foundation engineering. Experience with support of excavation, driven piles, and micropile design is considered an asset.
- Required designations or certifications: P.Eng. license in Canada.

This is a hands-on, field-focused role where you’ll work directly with crews, supervisors, and project teams.
You will:
- Spend time on active construction sites
- Support hazard assessments, audits, and investigations

This role includes both field work and administrative responsibilities.

What your day-to-day will look like in the field
- Walking job sites, observing work, and talking with crews
- Supporting hazard assessments (JHAs, energy-based risk reviews)
- Participating in inspections, audits, and safety tours
- Helping verify that critical controls are in place and working
- Assisting with incident reviews and gathering accurate information

- Supporting supervisors and project teams with safety planning
- Communicating with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies when required
- Helping ensure consistency in documentation and expectations across teams

- Tracking incidents, actions, and improvements in systems (e.g., Flex Manager)
- Following up on corrective actions from incidents and audits
- Supporting monthly reporting and trend tracking

- Helping develop and deliver toolbox talks, workshops, and safety materials

- Contributing to emergency response planning

Project Manager

SB Canada is currently seeking two (2) full time Project Managers to join our organization. The Project Manager is responsible for supporting our Project team(s) with all aspects of project management in geotechnical techniques, contract management, schedule, revenue and cost reporting, change management, project budgets, and client relations for the various types of work SB Canada executes.
- Be an active participant in our Health and Safety Program; helping to contribute to a positive safety culture as we move from compliance to care;
- Responsible for the lifecycle of execution of projects from handover of estimate to closeout, including successful construction, profitability, and client satisfaction;
- Preparation of project budgets and schedules and ensuring the project is completed within budget and on schedule;
- Reviewing the project plans, specifications and commenting on the design, schedule, possible cost savings measures, and potential construction problems;
- Manage and oversee several projects at once within region;
- Champion productivity KPI’s and ensure tracking tools are visible at field level;
- Coach and mentor other members of the Project Delivery team (s);
- Negotiate agreements with, and supervise the activities of subcontractors, subconsultants, and suppliers on projects;
- Ensure the timely mobilization of the proper equipment, tooling, and staff to project site as well as the timely delivery of materials by vendors;
- Address any technical issues that arise at site related to differing subsurface conditions or underground obstructions or utilities;
- Prepare construction contracts, review and negotiate any change orders, claims, holdbacks; address any payment issues with client;
- Communicating with a range of people including the client, subcontractors, suppliers, estimators, the safety team, and the workforce;
- Assist in the Preparation of Tender Documents / Prequalification Documents;
- Liaison / Contact Owners / General Contractors Relative to Tendering Stage and post-tender stage;
- Assisting and cooperating with the HSE team to ensure regulations relating to health, safety and the environment are adhered to; and
- Be a visible and strong leader in all key aspects of the business activity including safety, productivity, quality, community relations, and supporting corporate initiatives.
Although the role is based out of the Edmonton or Calgary Office, this position will be expected to travel to projects throughout the Prairies Region as required to support the successful delivery of projects.

Qualifications – What Will Make You Successful
- Bachelor’s degree in construction related field of engineering;
- 5+ years of project management experience in the Heavy Civil Construction Industry and possessing knowledge of the relevant construction industry codes and practices;
- Alternatively, 5+ years of project management experience with a general contractor working on projects with a significant foundation component;
- Experience with both commercial foundation projects as well as large industrial projects;
- Strong experience with effective health and safety programs, including HSE inspections and incident investigations;
- Demonstrated competency in MS Projects;
- Proven track record of successful project management of piling projects and experience and knowledge in the construction of drilled piles and driven piles;
- Some basic pile design knowledge would be beneficial;
- Registration as a P.Eng would be beneficial;
- Possess a valid Driver’s License;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and strong problem-solving skills.

The key responsibilities of this position are:

- Reviewing the project plans and specifications and commenting on the design, schedule, possible cost savings measures, and potential construction problems;
- Monitors daily, weekly and monthly labour, equipment, material and subtrade costs for tracking/documenting and monthly Invoicing
- Monitor the activities of subcontractors, subconsultants, and suppliers on projects;
- Progress Tracking/Reporting
- Ensure the timely mobilization of the proper equipment, tooling, and staff to project site as well as the timely delivery of materials by vendors;
- Interface with clients as required;
- Assisting and cooperating with the HSE team to ensure regulations relating to health, safety and the environment are adhered to.
