What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shrinking has darker ideas on its mind than its earnest approach can often translate, but Jason Segel and Harrison Ford's sparkling turns make these characters worth close analysis.

Tara Judah Sight & Sound While broad stereotyping worked beautifully for Brett Goldstein as the uber-angry footballer Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, Segel’s over-egging here comes across as insincere. Feb 12, 2025 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au For a story fuelled by grief, Shrinking expertly balances a hard-to-hit tone. It can be melancholic and hopeful, gloomy and absurd. Feb 6, 2023 Full Review Alison Herman The Ringer The latest Apple TV+ series with a focus on therapy comes from some of the people behind Ted Lasso, but without the same success. Feb 4, 2023 Full Review Ally Ham The Review Geek Where humans are involved, things are always going to be a little messy. That message envelopes Shrinking–a cozy comedy drama with a strong empathetic core. Rated: 8/10 Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Alison de Souza The Straits Times (Singapore) Likeable but melancholic comedy drama... Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Ilan Preskovsky Channel24 (South Africa) With its winning cast... solid comedy hit rate and well-pitched character-driven drama, it's both a more than worthy follow-up to Ted Lasso and a real delight in and of itself. Jason F Great series. I love every character Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Mane H A refreshing TV show that portrays the darkest and saddest moments of life with humor and warmth. It allows the audience to fully grasp the gravity of the situation while still holding onto hope. I also love the show's dynamic—it delivers exactly what’s needed without wasting time on meaningless filler scenes. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Tom F Don't get me wrong, its a great show. Funny and smart. While the characters meet interesting and complex emotional situations, the show fails to deliver on its name sake. A funny and splendid character driven show that seems to side step practical conversations of being "shrunk". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Nick R Very funny and expertly casted with great characters, but also heart-jerking with t a sense of dread. Shrinking balances strong themes, mental illness struggles, and grief from many different character types. Even though they are all the same in a quippy way, the cast is fantastic all around. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Pawel R Beautiful, funny, sad, heartwarming, just brilliant! Jason Siegel and Harrison Ford is the duo I never thought I needed so much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review DARYLL N It's one of the best shows I've ever watched. It's got everything. It's really funny with quick witted funny dialogue which has a more natural tone, whilst also being cool and unexpected at the same time. It's remarkable how they've managed to pull this off- people say things you don't expect and catch you off guard which makes you laugh (even LOL, even LMAO and even LMFAO). The way they do it is by blending a cool, stylised dialogue with a more natural way of speaking- it's a bit genius. It's also heartfelt and emotional, but not in a formulaic way, or a tried and tested seen before kind of way. It's down to earth, human. On the note of humanity- the characters all have depth, are all characters in their own right, not just supporting. You really enjoy each time a different character comes on screen as they're all so different and bring so much. I'm so bored of writing being formulaic- character wants this- obstacle- how's he/she gonna overcome it. This is so far from that. It's a celebration of humanity and all that goes with that. And like humanity it's really really funny and emotional, and unexpected and everything else that goes with it. We found ourselves not watching too many in one evening (even though we really wanted to) so we could savour it. We didn't want it to end. Please make many more. It's absolutely spectacular. The fact it isn't 100% just shows how out of touch RT reviewers are. And if this was on Netflix (sorry Apple, not a dig, just that most people have Netflix) it would outshine After Life (again, sorry Mr Gervais, not having a dig).
