Resident stories
Supporting non-verbal behaviours
An Italian woman, who is mostly non-verbal, yet sometimes calls out continuously, was offered a classical Italian playlist. Her eyes lit up, and she started singing ‘Arrivederci Roma.’ I had never heard her sing before. It was so special to connect with her in this way.
Decreasing agitation
One of our residents tended to demand an incredible amount of staff time due to her unsettled behaviours and agitation. We used the Resparke app to play the music that she loved. We were so happy to see her smile and listen for an hour! We just could not believe how much her favourite music calmed her. Music truly is the best medicine.
Religious services for isolated residents
One of our residents was unwell and unable to leave her room for some time. We knew she was very religious, and missing Mass would upset her greatly. We used Resparke to offer her a religious service and playlist. Her family were very happy about having this option for their mother and could see how much it calmed her.
Connecting to culture
An Irish resident with late-stage dementia was constantly up at night, pacing and agitated. Her personal preferences showed us that she loved to travel, so we offered her an ‘Armchair Travel Ireland’ documentary. She settled immediately. I checked in on her at the end of my shift, and she still wanted to continue using the headphones to listen and watch the tablet.
Supporting language preference
A 79-year-old man from Pakistan exhibited changed behaviour and reverted to his mother tongue, no longer speaking English. Both the staff and his family found it challenging to connect with him. We offered him Tamil music on Resparke. He became much more relaxed and even happy during these sessions. His son tells us he loves using the program to connect with his dad better.
